Religious Syncretism In The Painting: Our Lady Of Guadalupe
Religious syncretism can be described as the blending of two different religious beliefs into one new religion. It happens frequently when a group of people invade an area and bring their old religious beliefs, but also incorporate the new area’s legends, folklore, and beliefs to create a new shared religion. Religious syncretism is essential in the blending of different people, as well as even creating new cultures and identities within areas.
The painting “Our Lady of Guadalupe” or “Virgin of Guadalupe” shows an example of religious syncretism. The painting shows Virgin Mary bowed in prayer, an iconic symbol of the Catholic Church. However, the bronze color of her skin resembles “Indians” or a Mestiza, and she is also dressed in the clothing

    The print was a photo that was incorporated into a painting modeled by Raquel Salinas, who posed for her in 1999. She displayed that if in our community we respect the Virgin of Guadalupe than we should also have that same respect to all women. For instance, in Alma Lopez print we can see two women who are half naked, vibrant colors, exotic objects as well an atmosphere that can clearly be recognized as that of The Virgin of Guadalupe’s. In the art piece Our Lady, two women are shown, one is depicted wearing a robe much like that of the The Virgin of Guadalupe, the woman is half naked but is wearing a bikini of exotic roses symbolizing that she is also worthy of that same respect. Her robe is covered with images of Coyolxauhqui, the Aztec moon goddess that represents power to all women. The second woman is displayed half naked as well but isn’t covered but resembles a butterfly angel holding a black crescent moon. Ones interpretation of this art piece could be offensive to the Catholic religion because it can be seen as disrespecting the honorable icon of The Virgin of Guadalupe.     Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31).     Often, the paintings of Mary and Jesus used mainly red and blue and are used interchangeably with one another. Red symbolized the blood and the martyred heroes, whereas the blue stood for heaven, serenity and calmness. Mary was crowned as the queen of heaven when she died and Jesus brought her up to heaven to stand with him in the kingdom of God. Likewise, Romulus and Remus would’ve done the same and bring their mother to live with them in their kingdom/city. In person, it is more stunning to witness not only due to the size, but also because of the vividness the painting still holds after all these years. It seemed as though it was done almost yesterday due to the freshness the content displayed and in comparison to all the other artworks in the area, this stood out to me due to the colors itself. Mignard’s choice to bring attention to the individuals’ clothing by surrounding it with darker colors in the background created a contrast that was not too harsh to view and the bright colors lures one’s eyes into it. Also, his choice of the lighting created a focus that draws the viewer in so they would not have to look elsewhere to determine what the “thesis” of the artwork is.     At the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska there is an eighteenth century oil painting called Our Lady of Guadalupe, and like many Virgin paintings the artist is unknown. This painting features the iconic Virgin wearing a pink robe with a blue mantel, a crown, bowing her head and praying, and framing her are roses on each side. At the Denver Art Museum in Denver, Colorado is a painting titled Virgin of Guadalupe. Unlike most, this painting has an artist, Sebastián Salcedo. This is an oil on copper painting and it was dated in 1779. The Denver Art Museum provides an official description of the art piece, “Here the Virgin is surrounded by prophets, saints, angels, and seven miniature scenes of her miracles, all identified by inscriptions. At the bottom, Pope Benedict XIV and an Aztec princess (symbolizing Mexico) flank a landscape showing the Virgin’s church north of Mexico City” (para 2). At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City there is a collections of five artworks by Nicolás Enríquez made in 1773, one of which is a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This painting shows the classic portrait of the Virgin with four miniature scenes in each of the corner. In the top right and bottom right there is a scene of a man admiring the Virgin. In the top left there two men admiring the Virgin, and in the bottom left corner there is a scene of four men holding a fabric with the iconic image of the Virgin on it. In addition to the miniature scenes she is surrounded by clouds, and scattered roses. Lastly, at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco there is an oil painting titled Our Lady of Guadalupe.
