With the beast of Revelations, the myth would best fit into three of the five he discuses: Functional Theory, Symbolic Theory, and Structuralist Theory. The beast is part of the functional theory because it describes “what it does” and what the myth does. According to the myth, the beast will emerge from the Mediterranean Sea and begin the taunting and blasphemies about Christ. In the book “The Beast of Revelation: Myth, Metaphor or Soon-Coming Reality” John H. Ogwyn writes: “The elderly Apostle John stood upon the sandy shore of the Isle of Patmos in the Mediterranean Sea. As he gazed out to sea, the scene before him seemed to change. Dark clouds lowered and the sea appeared to churn. As he stared transfixed, a strange creature rose up out of the water.” It relates to the functional theory because it describes what the beast does and how it impacts the world in the second coming of…

The dragon in Revelation isn’t shrouded in mystery. In fact, a few verses after the dragon is introduced the bible says who the dragon represents—Satan, the devil who leads the world astray. Regardless, it’s important to understand the historical context of the symbolism we come across when interpreting Revelation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cultural context—especially that of the Israelites—surrounding the dragon around the time that Revelation was written. I decided on this topic because I’ve always been fascinated with the historical context surrounding ancient works. It also seemed interesting to learn about dragon mythology in ancient times. The symbol of a dragon as Satan is one that was easily understood across Israel…

In chapter 25 of Jeremiah, Jeremiah is inspired to go out to the people of Judah. The prophets had told the people of Judah earlier, "Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways… and you can stay in the land… Do not worship other gods…"(Jeremiah 25:5-6) He tells them "Because you have not listened to my words, I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon… and I will bring him against this land…"(Jeremiah 25:9) Jeremiah makes it clear why the Israelites will go into exile; because they didn't follow his commandments. Later Jeremiah states in the very same chapter how long the captivity will last.…

Kingdom Come raises the literary theme of Apocalypse through its illustration of utter destruction of the world. Apocalypse is the complete final destruction of the world that involves damage on a catastrophic scale. It is described in detail in the biblical book of Revelation. The article “Book of Revelation” in Wikipedia explains that the book contains multiple visions, one of which includes “the end of the world … in which Satan’s rule through Man is destroyed by the Messiah” (e.p. 1). The “end of the world” refers to the dreams that the Apostle John received from God, giving him insight on how the world will come to finish. The reason for the destruction of the world is to cease “Satan’s rule through Man”. “Satan” is the most evil and craftiest being that God created. “Man”…

The prophecies are clues that lead to the coming of the Messiah. One of the many prophecies is Genesis 49: 10. The religious concept of the Devil has faced numerous changes by society through different interpretations and representation to create new modernized ideas of what the Devil really is. This Devil originating from biblical teachings still holds value in society today, but it has also been changed to fit our own personal satisfying definitions that change from person to person, with many of these definitions sharing the same basic core beliefs. These different beliefs range from religious values, to cultural standards set by media outlets and everyday life.
