Refresh Benjamin Percy Analysis
To start this journal, I would just like to say "Genre Fiction" should not be compared, honestly with "Literary Fiction." After reading the short story by Benjamin Percy, "Refresh, Refresh," I became very depressed. After reading the "Literary Revolution in the Supermarket Aisle: Genre Fiction is Disruptive Technology," I discovered why. "Refresh, Refresh" is what I would call a piece of Literary Fiction. It has merit and depth, and yet so does Genre Fiction. "Refresh, Refresh" is also "Genre Fiction," as well. However, Literary Fiction helps us escape reality as does Genre, but Literary just gives us more problems. Depressing, ulcer-causing, loss of appetite problems. Those poor boys in that small town! I didn't want to have dinner that night after reading the story. Escapism is to distract from unpleasant realities, I thought this to be Literary Fiction, but if …show more content…
He seems to have only been the guy that avoiding all the pain. Until the two protagonists in the story, beat him up, almost like if that soldier had come home to find him in bed with his wife. For the short story, I could see the boys really standing up to the bully and beating him up in the middle. Then to find out the bully's father had passed. Then after, possibly befriend him and they all join and carry on in their father's footsteps. My long term goals are to become a stronger writer. I believe I am creative, but I need to work harder. I want to write for film and create ideas and work in a room full of writers and brainstorm. Ideally, a writer/creator for horror films or whatever my soul writes. New Line Cinema, Dark Castle, Columbia, etc. The list goes on and on. I want to be in charge of what people see on a screen. I want to entertain others with the world, as I have seen it for more than thirty years. My tank is full, I just need the directions to get

According to them, genres are simply “recurring kinds of texts”. This simple explanation applies to things like parking tickets, book summaries, gossip magazines, news headlines, and so much more. As a writer, a genre outlines a general template to follow. For instance, writing a résumé for a job application, or a lab report in Biology 101. As a reader, genres tell the reader what to expect from the writing in front of them. In other words, people who read mystery novels don’t want a non-fiction essay all about the secret life of butterflies. Wardle and Downs also draw parallels between genres and maps, calling genres “maps to new situations”, since both help people navigate in a new situation, whether being lost on the road or reading through new text. Additionally, they state that maps change based on new knowledge or technology, and similarly, genres are “maps that you should not rely on rigidly without thinking for yourself about what to do in any writing situation.” I find this advice particularly helpful, because similarly to the templates available in “They Say/I Say”, genres are general guides but not absolute…

Death is an obscure concept to most people and by humanizing the boy and making him seem just like one of us who has dreams and a life outside of war. Tim O’Brien re-emphasizes “The Man I Killed later on in the book in “Good Form” talking about how if he had only told you about how he walked by the boy, then you would not have had any sympathy or interest in the situation. Tim O’Brien’s stories are worth something more to a reader than other stories about war because they offer a deeper and truer insight that comes from a place of fiction. In books, you will find that most of the time you learn more from a fictional story than a true…

The genre of my story is mystery, a little scary, and adventurous. It’s not to long of a story but it is just long enough that you can read it in one to two days. I’m the same way with my books as I am with my movies. I like my movies a little scary but to scary to where I have nightmares, more mystery then adventurous but to where I have to actually pay attention because if I don’t I’ll get lost really bad!…

Before I start talking about what I want in the far future I need to set short term goals before long term. Such as graduating from Ramona High School. Not only do I yearn for a high G.P.A, such as a 3.5, but I also desire to walk across the stage with my head up high knowing that I did all that I could bring forth academically advanced. Besides my academic goals, I have other goals before finishing high school. An example is finishing with a winning record on the football team I’m playing on. Currently we have winning record of 3 wins 1 lose.…
