Reflective Essay: Overcoming Adversity On The Basketball Team
In my sophomore year of high school I was faced with adversity on the basketball team. The coaches showed a lot of favoritism and I was not one of their players they favored. They would put me in positions to fail, like placing me as a Center when I was more suited to play Small Forward or Power Forward. They expected me to not perform well and wanted to punish me and take playing time away, but instead I worked hard and performed well enough that they could not afford to keep me on the sidelines. When I was playing in the game if I did anything wrong, something so small that it is hardly even considered a fault, my coach would pull me out of the game and yell at me. When someone else did the same thing or something worse, he would pat them on the back and tell them "You'll do better next time," or he would completely ignore it and not say a word. …show more content…
I was very respectful but wanted to know why he would treat me the way he did. Finally as the JV season ended, the varsity coaches approached me and told me they were proud of how I responded to the adversity and brought me up to play on varsity. As a sophomore that was a big deal to me. What I learned from that situation is that as long as you keep your composure, talk with the others to see their point of view, and always keep working hard, you will always conquer the adversity no matter what. I had to deal with constant adversity for almost 5 months but I beat it and learned a big life lesson. I am glad I went through that basketball

Coach made a comment on how my nails would get ruined because the shot put area is mostly mud. That’s when I just had to look him in the eyes because he was the prejudice I had to fight. Ullman wrote; “staring prejudice in the face imposes a cruel discipline: to structure your anger, to achieve a certain dignity, an angry dignity”( 730). That dignity that grew all season was angry dignity, and it was what got me to break the girls throwing discus distance by two inches. I believe that was my biggest screw you to my…

My younger sister was better than me and I just wanted to quit. But, how could I give up on something I had put so many years into? Then I realized that I am not my sister and her talents are not my talents. I could contribute differently from her. So, I continued to work hard and my efforts paid off. Being one of my high school’s student leaders, both on and off the court, both inside and outside the classroom and both inside and outside my immediate community, has taught me that family is first, consistency is key, and consensus on the one common goal ensures success. As the captain of my Freshman Basketball team and now as the Head Manager of my Varsity Women’s Basketball team, this lesson has been learned over and over again in the past four years. I carry this with me everywhere I go. In each organization I am a member of and with every experience, focusing on family, consistency, and common goal is what has allowed me to motivate others as a leader to realize success. Hundreds of basketball games has taught me that success is not…

Starting the summer team was great, my coach trusted me and played me probably more than anyone on the team, if we were in a hard situation like, going to play a hard team, I got the chance to face them. The summer was going great. The trip to West Virginia, College coaches like me, they talked to me about playing for them, and this was also only my junior year and at the end of the year I was the number 1 on the team in pitching stats. Now the end of the summer, school was about to start for my senior year I started thinking about not leaving the states to play baseball, I wanted to stay in Florida because I thought, I was good enough. At this point my summer coach was no longer at my high school, he was fired from his position because of…

I played baseball throughout high school except for my senior year. The reason was that I was treated unfairly. During my junior year, I was told that I would play varsity and junior varsity. I put up outstanding numbers on junior varsity (batting average over .600, no field errors), but the coach refused to call me up to replace the other struggling player (batting average under .200, multiple errors), saying that it was just a slump and he would pull out of it. I was able to be on varsity for the playoffs, but couldn't take batting practice or field with the team with the coach saying that I wasn't part of the team. The player continued to struggle, but we did win the state championship (I did not receive a ring for not being a "member of…

I was exhausted and every muscle in my body ached. I watched others play but could never figure out what I was doing wrong. The worst part was that I knew others were watching me and couldn’t believe I was even trying to play basketball. The whispers I had heard earlier encouraging me to try something new soon became inner voices of doubt telling me that I was the slowest and most uncoordinated player to ever set foot on the court. I began to think of excuses I could give my coach to withdraw from the tryout list. That is when my friend Tommy approached me. He is an elite athlete and could do almost anything with a basketball. He volunteered to teach me anything I needed to know about basketball. At first, I was hesitant because I did not want his pity or want to waste his time. But then I thought about the kind of friend Tommy was for even offering and my attitude changed. He was not the kind of person to judge me, and I knew his intentions were always sincere. For the next two months, he patiently taught me how to handle the ball and to move my feet. We worked on my shot every day and dribbled the ball until I couldn’t feel my arms. I was nowhere near the peak as far as basketball skills go, but I had at least started the climb with Tommy’s help. The day of tryouts finally arrived; I was so nervous that I started dripping sweat before I even arrived at the gym. Tommy gave me a fist bump and wished me…

It was winter season and that meant basketball. This year was special because I got to play for Davidson Day’s seventh and eight-grade team. See at our school the middles school ran through 5th to 8th. The middle school basketball teams were divided into a 5th-6th-grade team and a 7th 8th grade team. This season was different; we would play more games and different teams. Also we got a new coach and older teammates. Tryouts were rough; the older kids were picking on the 7th graders constantly. I was the only one they liked because I was good. The season got even worse. The 7th graders never played in the games and sometimes in the locker room older kids would yell at us for messing up. This was horrible to watch and be apart of.…

“It’s certainly accepted as part of the culture that you game the system as much as you possibly can, and if you don’t get caught, it ain’t cheating,” said Stephen Mosher, a professor at Ithaca College who studies sports ethics. Many professional players explore gamesmanship,if not secretly, blatantly and it is sometimes brushed off as harmless and acceptable. Then there are times that strategies are genuinely cheating and despicable. Many people argue that gamesmanship corresponds with cheating, and that other people identify both as two different entities. I classify gamesmanship as its own creature, but share a symbiotic relationship with cheating. Gamesmanship relies on the knowledge of the rules and sometimes dipping its feet into the…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

Later in my high school career, now bigger and stronger, I tried out for an elite summer softball team. My new coach was unlike any coach I had had before. He would scream in my face, and point out my flaws in front of the entire team. However, most importantly, he challenged me to grow as a person and to confront my biggest fear, which is failure. He pushed me to my limits, making me want to quit and wishing I had never played the game. Despite these challenges, I persevered and became mentally and physically…
