Reflective Essay On The Reading Cycle
Over the course of the semester, I was able to work with a fifth grade student, Luke, on his reading. Luke is currently reading at an end of first grade level. At the beginning of the semester, when I first began working with Luke, he was reading at an early first grade level. He has shown much improvement over the three cycles that I worked with him on. Not only did he improve with his reading, but also I saw his confidence increase after each cycle. Luke began reading a level F. He had a lot of success with this level, which is when I decided he would move up to a level G. Level G seemed to be too easy for Luke. He was able to complete the fluency passage almost twice through on his first try. Along with that, the benchmark passage also seemed to be too easy for him. He was able to read the entire book by himself on the first day. After noticing this, I continued him on another day with this passage and book. Then, decided continuing with the passage was no longer beneficial for Luke because it was extremely easy. Luke moved up a level H, which was the level that he ended on. We both thoroughly enjoy the games and activities that are along with the individual book cycle. Additionally, this allowed for Luke to interact with the material in fun and exciting way rather than spending his time re-reading the book. The four-day cycles were beneficial for Luke. He had once stated that he liked being able to review and re-read the book in order to become more fluent. Along with that, I liked being able to see his growth and progress throughout the course of four days. Luke has also stated that he enjoys seeing his progress by his scores on the cold, warm, and hot read. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed doing project MORE with Luke due to the cycles and

    I began working with my student relatively late in the program due to scheduling conflicts after many negotiations and time working with student we are able to come up with a schedule that works for us. When we first began the program I noticed that she seemed to grasp the concepts rather quickly and almost became bored with the program from start. My student is a young girl who happens to be my younger sister and she is able to read. While her reading level is not low it is not real high either side.     Alas Babylon by Pat Frank is a literary work of art that holds important themes applicable to the present. Though the story takes place in the time of the Cold War, some of the messages are still transferable to life in the modern world. An apocalyptic world where the United States is at war with the Soviet Union is the premise of the book in which the characters are put up to the ultimate test, survival. The passage, “Survival of the fittest…the strong survive. The frail die…That’s how it is and that’s the way it’s going to be” (pg. 176) reminds society today that life changes and we as humans must adapt or die, to acclimate to our situations to come out in the best way possible, and perhaps most importantly, to learn from those who do not adapt. This is elaborated on more with the quote, “Some nations and some people melt in the heat of crisis and come apart like fat in the pan. Others meet the challenge and harden” (pg 133). Not everyone reacts the same way to problems and those who do not react responsibly and with a calm head will ultimately “melt” while those who understand the responsibilities and actions that must be carried out will “harden”, come out stronger and wiser for it. This quote rings true in many forms. When countries are at war, the leaders have different strategies for attack. They will lead the war with the ideas they think are best, even though they differ from others. The author Pat Frank included these words to show how when tragedy strikes, every person will react in their own natural response, some more strongly and wittedly than others. The main action everyone in the book attempted to accomplish was that of surviving another day and living to see tomorrow as explained with the words found on page 123, “The struggle was not against a human enemy, or for victory.
