Reflective Essay: Improving My Writing Process
During this time, I’ve been experimenting with small changes in my workflow, my writing process and the types of content I produce. The result has been an improvement in my writing and a better understanding of how I work best. Hopefully, you’ll find some of these things helpful in improving my own writing. Feedback is hugely important for my writing. If I don’t spend long on a piece, I often overlook small typos or grammatical issues. I don’t craft my words quite as carefully as I could, and I tend to repeat myself a bit. Having someone read over my writing can highlight these issues and help me to clean up my work. On the other hand, if I spend a long time on a piece, it can be just as bad. It’s easy to become lost in a piece after a while, and have trouble stepping back and seeing it objectively. It’s also hard to forget all the extra contexts I have in my head by that point and read it as a reader, who has little or no context about the topic. Again, having someone else read my work really helps at this point. If nothing else, it gives me a break to refresh my mind before I come back for more editing. Usually, though, I find my work improves from other people’s suggestions. …show more content…
The editing process is usually more straightforward, and I’m sure many of you would agree that getting those first few words on paper (or screen) is one of the hardest parts of writing. Procrastination has also been my major drawback in this semester. However, your proper guidance and suggestions have helped me control and limit my level of procrastination. In the beginning of the semester I had only basic knowledge of essay, but after this class I came to know how can writing be a precious tool to student with proper citation skills, grammatical skills, sentence structure as well as proper use of diction and

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

When one masters a certain practice, one becomes confident and nearly perfects the practice either because one had guidance or practiced continuously. I have not put myself in either one of those situations. To be honest, I write ‘put myself’ because I believe I had the choice of removing myself from classrooms to another better one; and the choice of being able to discipline myself to practice writing continuously.…

I now have a more efficient system of planning and write multiple drafts before I feel at ease with submitting an assignment. Not only that, I now feel confident when writing papers and am able to complete assignments with little or no writers block. Although, writing in college has not been the easiest. It took me a while to transition to this level of writing and took a lot of hard work to get to where I am at now. Sometimes, I find myself over reviewing an assignment before I actually turn it in. Not that this is bad, but at times it takes me longer to submit an assignment than it…

With all this being said about my writing weaknesses I still find ways to enjoy writing and work past the struggles in writing- I may not be the most organized writer in the world, while the graphic organizers do indeed help me, but I always find myself changing my mind on what to write, whatever sounds better to the ear to me. My desire to change what I already have written may be why I’m unorganized at times. One thing that anybody that truly knows me knows, is that I rarely ever quit something once it is started, and I will continue to do my best until it is physically impossible for me to do…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

This year I finalized my writing process and how I choose to go about writing my works. I focused on a number of Composition and Writing Process pieces in my portfolio. In the past, I was used to writing rough drafts for all my final papers and only occasionally would I write an outline for them as well. As shown mainly through the Cultural Identity process, the slower and more thorough of a process I take with my writing, the better it will be. Similarly, the rough draft I wrote for my persuasive essay showed multiple errors and places that need to be fixed and patched up in order to improve the strength of my message. For a good majority of the papers I wrote this year, I wrote an outline and a rough draft that was revised at least once. I believe that I have become accustom to a writing…

What a journey my writing has experience over the past seven weeks has been. I have grown as writer more in this class than I have previously. Writing has always been a challenge for me. Many people have heard of someone who just can’t get math, well that is me with writing. Back in high school there many times that an assignment did not get turned, not because I had not worked on it, but I could never get the ideas in my head to make sense when I wrote them on paper. I would get so frustrated that many ended up in the trash crumpled. For every assignment we have worked on I still get frustrated. What takes many, minutes to write and sound eloquent take me, hours to sound short and abrupt. But with each lesson we have gone through my…

In the writing process my greatest concern would be the revising phase. After my first draft is completed, I ought to make a decision ways to improve my writing. It requires looking at my writing at a different point of view. I need to analyze my writing to look for clarity and decide if I need to add information. Furthermore, I essentially need to decide if my writing peaks my reader’s interest and be believable. I have to look at my writing at a different point of view and APU writing center session suggested is to read my writing out loud during the revising phase for sentence structure clarity.…

After reflecting on the last semester, I realize how much I have grown as a writer. I still have a long way to go, but I have certainly improved. Since Mr. Frigo allowed us to choose our topic for each essay I was always able to write about something that interests me. That also allowed me to focus more on the process of writing than the content. With a better understanding of the five-step writing process I will be able to endure College Writing II.…

My tutoring session came at the near the end of my writing process, but it could be helpful at any point. In particular, I was in the Editing stage, as presented by James D. Williams in Preparing to Teach Writing. The other stages are Invention, Planning, Drafting or scribing, Pausing, Reading and rereading, Revising, Editing, and lastly Publishing. Editing is the stage where grammar and punctuation matter the most. Until this stage, the focus of the author is to get their ideas on the page and to organize their thoughts. Nevertheless, no matter how important these stages are, the stages can be grouped together to form a more coherent idea, and sometimes authors do not go in this exact order, but rather jump or linger, in one or…
