Reflecting American Values
As someone who has always been pulled between two interdisciplinary passions, history and biology, combining different subjects to create one complete course is the ideal challenge. Rather than playing tug-of-war with my interests, I can utilize them both to solve real-world issues. My course would focus on the recent refugee crisis; I have discussed this issue separately in classes like AP English Literature, AP Government & Politics, and Faith. My course would delve into the debate of questions such as "Are we to set limits on refugee immigration?" and "How will our response to this crisis reflect American values?" Each discipline would be able to contribute to the conversation with their vast experience and knowledge. An English professor

The class has broadened my thinking process quite a bit now since the beginning of class. The Oral presentation on gentrification in El barrio has changed my outlook on how communities in the united states are being manipulated to change because of the area they live in and how that area is in need of change but not for the betterment of the people that live in that community but for the investors and other people that are trying to move in to change the demographics of that community. These kind of communities are hurt the most because sometimes the property is valued more than the culture that is being asked to step aside.…

The beliefs and values that all members of our society share are our American Civic Values. The most basic belief is freedom, but is also justice for all people. Our society tries using many different programs, laws, and regulations to strengthen our civic values. Individuals do many different things such as volunteering, and they also their moral ethical standards to strengthen their American Civic Values. As parents we have to teach our children about good civic values, but do not only teach then that we also teach them about respecting others, and helping share responsibilities for one another in a positive and very supportive way. I feel that today’s society does reinforce American Civic Values, but not as strictly as before. Now one might…

My responsibility to America is to be a model citizen. To me this means you take care of your family. It also means to lead by example. It can also mean to participate in the democratic process. My Responsibility to America The United States of America is known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. Right now there are approximately 324, 118, 787 people living in the United States. Every single one of these people is part of the freedom we gained. We have freedom because of our Founding Fathers and the people of their time. They established the rights that we enjoy today.…

My English 102 class has now begun! My Prof. has only put three assignments up along with the syllabus I attached to this email. She gave us two options to pick from for the books we will be reading. I picked Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America (by Barbara Ehrenreich) because I can understand it and it was more interesting to me than the other book. She gave us three assignments so far that is due each week. My first discussion is to read the first half of our chosen book. Then, write a reaction on the discussion board, showing what you believe are the major themes or ideas worth discussing from that book. My response must be at least 500 words, in Standard American English with correct grammar. The…

    Core Values In America

As puritans began to settle into America, they held three core values as a way to righteously live life. Those three values were: piety, courage, and industry. Hence, these values made their way into many sermons and early American writings that are still read in our modern day. To be pious is to devote yourself to a religion, in this case the puritans were pious towards God. Courage is the ability to do something brave in a frightful situation. Lastly, industry is the ability to work hard towards something. To the puritans, God always came first so they decided to leave their home countries to stay devoted to their religion. It took much valor and hard work to withstand days at sea surrounded by ill people and a limited food supply. Nonetheless, they would go through such extremities to remain pious to their beliefs.…

Over the 1940s and 1950s, the U.S. fought both a World War and a subsequent Cold War in the name of defending and even spreading American values to the rest of the world. War (whether hot or cold) is never easy or pleasant, especially for a democracy attempting to win its conflicts without undermining its core values, and during this period of high tension the U.S. undoubtedly engaged in actions and behavior, both at home and abroad, which challenged its claims to be acting in the name of freedom and democracy. Overall, however, do you believe the U.S. basically lived up to its proclaimed ideals in its struggles against fascism and communism? Or, in the course of these conflicts, did it too often go against its own professed values to be able to credibly maintain that it ultimately upheld them? Was it acceptable for the U.S. to act out of accordance with its core values from time to time in the name of securing them in the long haul? Or could it have successfully reached the same ends in ways that better maintained its ideals?…

    Belonging to America

My grandfather always used to explain to me how lucky I was to be able to be an American. He would inform me on how valuable it was and how I should never take it for granted. He expressed that I should feel honored to be able to have all the opportunities I do. I never understood him growing up. I did not understand how growing up somewhere, like America, versus another country could be any different. I understand now. When I was younger, my mother would tell different stories about her childhood. She would go into saying, “Growing up grandpa was in the service. I always missed him and did not understand why he had to go fight people “for our freedom,” as he would say. I always felt free, I always felt like everyone in the world got along, I didn’t understand why he had to go out and fight, why he had to go out and risk his life.” She would inform me on how important it was, as an American, to contribute to our country and to do my part as a citizen. My grandfather served in the army. What could I do?…

Teenagers these days no longer show their pride in being an American anymore. I truly believe that without that pride in your country, there is no America. To encourage those people, maybe even friends of your own, to actually show the pride that they may or may not have in their country, you must make them realize how wonderful this country is and how well off they have it here compared to other countries all over the world. Though America is in a bad time at the moment, we have the strength and persistence to get through it as we have in the past.…

Once Africa and Asian regions were conquered by European powers, American businessman became fearful of losing ground, so to speak. (Shultz, 2014). Meanwhile, conquering the Western Frontier gave confidence and a sense of superiority to the federal government and businessmen alike. This new-found attitude drove America to explore and conquer other continents, moving from the Pacific, to Latin America, to the Asian continent. Furthermore, the self-righteous attitude of Christians during that time felt the need to bring salvation, education, and progress to under-developed countries. (Shultz, 2014). Christians had a superiority complex just like the businessmen.…

There are so many standards we have in American, especially for young adults. From what I learned from these passages, is that you not only have to speak a certain way, but you have to look a certain way to get accepted. My heart breaks when I think about all the children that are punished or punish themselves for not having the correct standards for this society. I believe in America we should not be so strict about our image. For a country that is based and structured around freedom, we are not free at all. We are unfortunately confined.…
