Rebecca Nurse Injustice
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Rebecca Nurse also known as Goody Nurse throughout most of the play has a very significant response to injustice after being tried for “taking part” in witchly activity. Ann Putnam accuses Rebecca Nurse of witchcraft due to the multiple stillborn babies that she conceived under Nurse’s care, she often criticizes the trials and helps to show us the truth behind the lies. Through the character of Rebecca Nurse the human-feeling side of injustice and how these accusations tear apart the village of Salem is seen. From the start of the Salem Witch Trials we see Rebecca Nurse as a main contender as she sat at Betty Parris’ side as she was laying in bed, sick. Rebecca Nurse denies the mere idea of witchcraft being evident in the village“I have seen them through all of their silly seasons, and when it come on them they will run the Devil Bowlegged keeping up with their mischief”(16). Her denial is evident while Abigail is telling the story, and tells the others that it is just something they made up because they are in their ‘silly season’. Abigail's motives are arcane. Putnam often seems to not be able to blame the children's deaths on witchcraft and is not able to accept that they may just be a medical or coincidental occurrence. “ If so he is, then let us go to God for the cause of it. There is prodigious danger in the seeking of loose spirits. I fear it, I fear it. Let us rather blame ourselves”(22). Rebecca tries to explain to Ann Putnam that not everything has to be blamed upon the devil and his servants, she is trying to keep Ann and the girls from blaming the people in the village from occurrences that aren’t specifically caused by the Devil.     The citizens of Salem spread many preposterous lies and rumors out of fear and even for their own personal gain. Naturally, blaming someone else for wrongdoing is an immediate and instinctive reaction. For example, the fear of getting in trouble can drive one to put the blame on someone else in order to avoid the consequences. The characters in The Crucible rely on blame to get out of hard situations, motivated by this aspect of fear. Towards the very beginning of the novel, Betty and Abigail have many suspicions surrounding them, and they need to direct the townspeople’s wrath away from themselves. Abigail claims that “I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil” (Miller 48)! Abigail and Betty therefore avoid their initial fate. As the book progressed, the lies piled on top of each other, and soon everyone wanted in on the action. Blame turned into a use of getting back at one another. For instance, Ann Putnam claims Rebecca Nurse “murdered seven babies by sending out her spirit on them” (Miller 56). Rebecca Nurse is falsely accused, arrested and later executed.
