Ralph Waldo Emerson's Greatest Accomplishments
Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated, “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” This quote means that being yourself can be hard at times. However, if you are yourself then things might go your way more often. The more things that go your way will make you a happier person. Emerson’s statement is true because you would have nothing different to do, the reward and punishment would be given only to you, and you just have to put yourself before others at times. Having the power to reward or punish yourself is a nice feeling. The only person that can control you, is yourself. For example, the other day I had a stack of homework to complete. It was my responsibility to have it done by the end of the week. I had two options, do the work and get a good grade, or not do it and fail the assignment. Getting good grades is important to me, but it’s also important to my parents. I did the assignment, and rewarded myself with the satisfaction of completing it. The feeling that you get when you do something correct is too hard to pass up. That is why having the …show more content…
Everyone should be themselves all the time because it makes them unique. Many ask, what’s so great about being different? Others would say individuality is an important characteristic. As an illustration, I met a girl who wanted to change who she was so others would like her. She tried very hard to make friends, but it didn’t work. Alas, she grew tired of being something that she’s not and went back to her old self. When she accepted the fact the she was not like her classmates, other things began to come to mind. She didn’t care what others thought of her, and actually started to make some friends. Today, that girl is still happy; while, she is still being herself. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to change yourself to impress

It has been rightfully said that a poet has the maximum influence on the life of a common person. Ralph Waldo was one such poet who made a lot of people come face to face with the usual everyday issues, we pay no heed to in our life. His essays and poems are still considered to be an inspiration to all men and women. Through his poems and essays, like “Self Reliance, “The American Scholar” and “Inspiration,” he had managed to set up an example in front of the world and his work received its due acclamations. Being a firm believer of religion and God his ideas were greatly inspired by the fact that human beings could transcend from the physical world to a spiritual world. Failures should be sought after and not be concealed by our own ego; in fact, Thoreau, upon reflecting his future death, realized how he did not wish to be confined. In my own experience, I have also discovered this idea and the knowledge dawns on me whenever I reflect upon myself, while underneath the celestial night sky. The discovery was early on in my life, around 15, that I learnt to search for my own failures and not ignore them, but encourage them. Nevertheless, this may seem like an exhausting way of life, granted it has worn itself on me a few times, however it eventually grows to be looked at as an embarrassing starting point of an ability or perspective, which later can grow to a substantive experience.…

I couldn’t believe that me of all people had gotten injured. I was very involved with injury prevention and performed strengthening exercises, stretches, made safe decisions, and had very a very healthy diet on a daily basis. Over the next eighteen months I visited over six different experts who claimed that they recognized my injury and knew how to treat it. After nearly three months without any noticeable improvement I began to conduct my own research and try to correct my problem myself. I developed a keen interest in the field of rehabilitation and the many mysteries that the body held. When the time…

Finally individualism is shown in a romantic form in Emerson self reliance. Emerson believes that the individual can achieve whatever it wants.”“Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession. That which each can do best, none but his Maker can teach…

What does it mean to “be yourself”? What does it mean to conform to comply with others standards or opinions? Do you ever change your appearance, behaviors, or actions based on what you believe others will think? When venturing into the topic of conformity vs individuality, I strongly believe that you should strive to both exercise conformity and individuality in your life. It feels great to be part of a group, to fit in, but in doing so DO NOT lose sense of who you truly are. If in social situations you find yourself being steered to talk differently, act differently, or simply do things differently from the way you truly are, then you may be conforming in order to fit in. Be who you genuinely are, not who people want you to be. Ultimately,…

In order to have a high self-esteem and be happy, people need to establish what self is. Everyone has self-esteem according to Twenge. Since childhood, people are told to “just be themselves,” so that others can accept us for who we really are. Even though being true to oneself personality wise, people act differently, depending on the situation at hand. One does not usually act the same way in school as they do in a home setting. One does not talk the same way to a friend as they do to a teacher. It is all dependent on what the situation calls for. Twenge says that when wanting to know how to act in a social situation, one should “just be themselves” (Twenge 491). With this being said, a person with high self-esteem will have the confidence to be themselves because they value who they are, while a person with low self-esteem will find it hard to be themselves because they will think that people will not like them for who they are. Therefore, a front is put up and people act differently when interacting…
