It is safe to assume that there are both negative and positive aspects of reality television. Do the cons outweigh the pros or vice versa? In our opinion there is much more negativity in reality shows in modern day entertainment than there are positive reinforcements. Reality shows give viewers false sense of reality and unrealistic expectations. The stars of these shows give off the persona of a real person where the audience develops a connection seeming they can relate to the everyday person. People seem to think, feel and act like these characters they see on these programs which could…

Few years. They can be seen on a global scale. Due to this gain in popularity, concerns have emerged about the values that are being portrayed on these shows, particularly how those values affect women. Girls between the ages of 8 -18 spend 6 ½ hours per day with various media (Rideout & Roberts & Foehr, 2005). That amount of viewing has changed what is acceptable behavior and image young girls and women. I have found that reality television programming only shows sexual content 27% of the time, compared with movies at 89%, sitcoms 84%, and soap operas, 80% (Lederer, 2001). As with any television program, reality television programming will still have an impact on standards and behavior, including behavior in women and young girls.…

The article Reality Television: Oxymoron by George F. Will describes how television works and how it has changed over the years. He explains how television shows are now mostly imitations, they create shows off other shows with a somewhat more interesting twist making viewers more interested in watching. According to George F. Will, people are becoming "desensitized". Since people are becoming less easily shocked or amazed, television shows now are increasing the amount of degradation, violence, and sexuality. George F. Will’s main points are imitation and the shock factor. One of his examples was “Fear Factor” and how it is a spin-off of the television show “Jackass” just they added a reward. Making the participants more…

Sadly, the days of scripted television may soon be gone. Reality programming is rapidly consuming much of today's entertainment. One of the genres that is taking the reality hit the hardest is the sci-fi/supernatural genre. Shows in this category are th polar opposite of reality TV and are suffering for it.
