Written by Tchaikovsky in October and November of 1869, and extensively revised 3 times, July and September 1870. Then the final version of the score written in August 1880. The first version written with only an opening fugato then a confrontation of two themes. The premiere of Romeo and Juliet at first in 1870 had a lukewarm response in Europe and Russia, in my opinion may be the reason for two more versions to be developed. Second version of Romeo and Juliet included a development portion that left out the love theme, adding the comforntation between the Montagues and Capulets in the first theme, also leaving out the love theme during the violence in the first theme. “In the recapitulation the first theme strongly influences the love theme and ultimately destroys it. By following this pattern, Tchaikovsky shifts the true musical conflict from the development section to the recapitulation, where it climaxes in dramatic catastrophe.” (Wikipedia) In the third revision of Romeo and Juliet in 1880, Tchaivosky re- wrote the ending. Also added a sub title “Overture-Fantasia” then premiered May 1 1886 in a part of the then Russian empire Tbilisi, Georgia.
