COMM/218 - PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR THE IT PROFESSIONAL
April 22, 2014
Diane Pawlak

After reviewing my instructors feedback there are a few things that I need to work on in this class. One of which is making sure that everything is covered as per the syllabus. This is mainly trying to hurry through and skimming. In order to correct this problem I need to read the instructions fully and follow them. The second one is visual aids besides power point. This one is rather challenging for me because I would normally do the presentation with the camera on my laptop but the only time I have been getting to do my homework is in my bed with my little one sleeping beside me. This makes it rather strange because even my laptop is normally beside my head with a wireless keyboard on my lap.

The verbal and nonverbal speaking anxiety signs that I have noticed that I have is listening to the sound of my own voice. The recording never sounds good enough for me and if I attempted to record the best one I could it would take me forever. Specific areas I intend on working on in this class is improving my confidence when it comes to recording, working on finding time to do video instead of just audio presentations, and listening to the constructive criticism of my peers and instructor in order to improve my performance. I would like to accomplish learning how to properly give a good presentation in this course. I have never been great at public speaking and I would like to learn how to improve the presentations that I need to give in order to keep my audiences attention and still give the information I need to without sounding drab and boring. The ways I would improve on my weak areas is continue to use them and listen to the feedback I receive. “Practice makes perfect” and public speaking is a great example of an area of study where that saying definitely rings true. The one saying I found online that really make me think was “To

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

The video, "Brilliant Public Speaking," discussed practices that a public speaker can use in order to be more effective when delivering the intended message. Getting prepared is the most important part to delivering an effective message. Without preparation, the invitation for disaster exist. Rehearsing the presentation in front of a mirror, or using a video recorder to record yourself can give you a better perspective on how you look while speaking. Dress appropriately, but just a bit different from everyone else. Standing out from the rest of the people there, will set you apart from the start. During the opening remarks, capture the audience with a bang of an opening statement. Make them want more.…

I took a couple of slow deep breaths before I started. I focus in on my audience. Instead of looking down while doing my speech I look around the room making eye contact with everyone. I remembered that they are individual people, they are my classmates. I worked on the introduction so my speech will get off to a good start. I use video to create interest, draw attention away from me. My voice was not as shaky; therefor my tone of voice was smooth. I used my arm and hands to help tell my story effectively and drive home my main…

My whole life, public speaking has daunted me. When I am forced to present in front of a class, I do not feel nervous until I am at the podium facing thirty other students. Even though I am confident in what I am saying, my body and words prefer to shake. I have tried to improve my speaking abilities but have not had much success. It wasn’t until I decided to really challenge myself that I found…

My first skill is about how I struggle when communicating in verbal presentations. I’m confident when it comes to verbal communication in conversations or interviews. However when being in front on large audiences I find it hard to be as confident. During college I never needed to prepare my own presentation and present them. It was a new experience for me to get into groups or prepare a presentation by myself in front of my peers. I have experienced around 5 presentations now and I feel I am becoming more confident in myself and don’t get as worried when I know I have to do one. However I still feel like it’s a weakness when it comes to my skills and would like develop myself to become clear and confident when doing presentations. An example of how I no I’m doing better in this skill is that my grades have become higher. I feel I’m weak when doing presentations because I experience feeling nervous and forget to say things when I know what I’m talking about, so it comes across unprofessional and weak.…

Winston Churchill once said, “A good speech, should be like a woman’s skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.” Public speaking is a skill almost everyone in today’s world needs to develop to succeed. There are people that are born without stage fright and know how to manipulate a crowd to their pleasing. For most of us, we’re not accustomed to public speaking and it takes multiple speeches to gain a sense of comfortability in front of a crowd. In this pre-course analysis, I’m going to talk about my past speaking experiences, strengths and weaknesses, my goals for this course, and how I plan to use public speaking in the future.…

Public speaking is an area I feared for several years. My biggest drawback when it comes to public speaking is my lack of confidence. The session helped me realize that it is okay to be nervous, actually it is extremely common. Lacking confidence is something I struggle with regarding leadership as well. I now am aware that confidence can be improved both with public speaking and everyday living. I will take the information I learned about gaining confidence in public speaking and apply it to my…

Some surveys and research results show that most people would rather die than talk in front of a live audience. Glossophobia, also known as fear of public speaking, is very common today. The thought of having to prepare a speech and speak your own thoughts in front of an audience terrified me before I entered this communication class. It wasn’t so much the talking part, but sharing my own opinions, thoughts, or research, with people who might not agree with what I am talking about. Looking back, there are three improvements I have made throughout this course. I have improved my outlining skills, critical thinking skills, and my public speaking apprehension. These improvements are for the most part what I wanted to improve on and talked about in my CIP paper earlier this semester. It is a good reflection on how practice in an area can improve your skills in just a short amount of time.…
