Assignment 1: Experimental Analysis

Part One:

1. I think Dr. Straight’s hypothesis would be if boys were given a target, they could be potty trained easier.

2. The independent variable for Dr. Straight’s experiment is using a cheerio as a target. a. Using a cheerio as a target is the independent variable because it influences or manipulates how easily the boys could be potty trained (dependent variable).

3. The dependent variable of the study is potty training the boys should become easier. a. The dependent variable of the study is potty training the boys should be easier because it depends on a cheerio being used as a target (independent variable).

4. I think one good thing about this study was Dr. Straight was able to perform the experiment with real people and could not only see the results but he also was able to receive positive and negative feedback from both groups.

5. One thing Dr. Straight could have done to improve his study was not only inform the parents of the study but explain to the parents to keep it a secret. The parents of the children who were in the cheerio group could have guided and lectured their child to aim for the cheerio. a. This could improve the study because all of the children would be acting upon the task alone without the input of others. If the parents explained to the child to aim for the cheerio, the child knows to aim for the target instead of discovering the target by themselves.

In this experiment, the independent variables are the different types of beverages that will be used. The dependant variables (the variables influenced by the different beverages) is the running time (the time that the person will run in one lap), the amount of pushups done in one minute, how many sit-ups is completed by two minutes, and the number of jumping jacks that are done in thirty seconds. I believe that Gatorade will help your athletic performance the most, therefore the other drinks such as water, Arizona Tea, milk, Mott’s Apple Juice, and Coca-Cola is the control group. The controlled variables in the experiment (items that will stay the same) is…

Therefore, this can easily be overcome by not giving out the scores of the participants to ensure that they do not become stressed over knowing their results in both conditions. 8 participants were used in this experiment and were all aged 17 however, both males and females were used in this investigation. The sampling method that was used was random sampling to ensure that a biased sample was not used, on reason a biased sample was not used is that participants weren’t selected for certain reasons, and another reason is that it prevents a certain group of participants from applying to take part in the study. Participants were not allocated to certain groups in this investigation because, although there were two conditions, each participant took part in both conditions therefore, participants didn’t have to be allocated to specific groups. Each participant was tested individually, in a room without distractions in order to ensure that their full concentration was on the…

The first study that I chose is study one that demonstrates that women perform more poorly, on average, than men perform on the mathematics section of the SAT. I chose this study because I needed to know more about it and it left me with the question, “why?” One of the reasons that came to mind as to why this is true is that men are more geared towards math and science that the majority of women. In my opinion, I thought this would be something interesting to study. The independent variable is the mathematics section on the SAT test. The dependent variable is the women’s performance.…
