The Role of a Psychiatrist and How to Become One

Psychiatrists assess and provide treatment for patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They also study how the brain and nervous systems function and how these interact with people’s environments and affect the way people think, feel, and behave. They help people in many ways and it’s just fascinating how they do their job. Psychiatrists have the ability to understand how the human mind works, tell whether someone is lying or not, and most of all determine if someone is in a happy or sad state of mind. The purpose of my research paper is to explore the various requirements of a psychiatrist and to judge the appropriateness of this career for myself. To become a psychiatrist, one must take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) in order to have the best opportunity to enter medical school. Various science courses with lab requirements, such as physics, chemistry, and biology are needed to acquire the job. One must also receive a 4 year degree in the science field. Medical colleges report yearly tuition costs range from $18,748 for public medical school to $38,337 for private medical schools. Private schooling is more efficient for the proper teachings and gives more focus to the students. Psychiatrists receive a minimum of 5 additional years of training. John Hopkins University in Baltimore is the number one school to become a psychiatrist. Students gain hands-on skills in a variety of settings through clinical training while studying several aspects of psychiatry. Research fellowships including specialty fellowships in areas such as clinical neuropsychology, anxiety disorders, behavioral psychology, and pharmacology are also available. Education seems to be expensive, but the knowledge I will gain will prove to be useful in my future plans on becoming a psychiatrist.
