Psp Professional Services Internship Experience
My internship experience for this summer was quite engaging, exposing, knowledgeable, yet challenging at the same time. I began to serve at PSP Professional Services on May 31st. PSP Professional Services is a private practice created by one of the licensed counselors and it is funded through several insurances and/or employer-sponsored services. Moreover, my schedule consisted of going Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. Occasionally, I would attend Saturdays depending if there was an interpreter needed for the day. I chose this specific facility because it is located in the Hispanic area and I support the premise behind the foundation of this facility. PSP Professional Services hopes to reach out to those who have been victimized, …show more content…
I had the privilege to interpret in sessions, as well as sit and observe them. Each session was about 50 minutes long; however, they could extend to 2 hours if it is family therapy. I would also help at the summer camps held at the facility. I would interact with the children and assist the counselor and graduate intern in terms of teaching the children coping skills, creating games, posters, crafts, cleaning, and translating to the children or parents who did not understand English so well. Camp meetings were about four hours. In addition, I would also assist in the front office by filing insurance claims, making files for the new clients, making reminder calls for the camps or group sessions, signing-in the clients, making copies of the forms used for intakes, and etc. Typically, each assignment I had at the front desk took anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Overall, my experience at PSP Professional Services was phenomenal! I would definitely recommend other students to intern at this facility, especially if they are seeking the counseling approach of the psychology field. They do a great job at allowing students to gain first-hand experience by allowing them to observe sessions, as well as exposing them new techniques. Additionally, counselors are very knowledgeable as they are willing to help you understand coping skills, counseling techniques, or certain terminology in general. The staff at this facility actually invests time in your education in terms of how to prepare for graduate school, how to interact with clients, how approach different types of clients, how to administrate the practice, how to do notes and diagnose, and etc. They really understand the concept of sharing knowledge in order to make a greater impact in the community. However, I would recommend that they should hire interpreters, whose job would solely be to interpret sessions, interpret for clients, forms, and

The initial consultation should not last any more than an hour and in this time you can do all the fact finding you need to do about the client and then towards the end of the session do a PMR with them just so they get a feel of what will happen in future sessions. Some therapists choose to do a free consultation lasting around half an hour where they can get them to fill in the consultation form, get information about what they have come to see you for etc. The only issue with this is it is taking up your time, which you could be using for another patient who is paying and people may only come because they see the word ‘free’ and not come back again.…

Why am I interested in the MPD internship? I am interested in the MPD internship for numerous reasons. First, as my junior year is quickly concluding, I would like to narrow my quest for the correct placement, in addition to increasing my experience in a field that coincides with social work. Social Work is a very broad field, being that it ranges from military social workers to hospital ones, so hands on experience would better help me to choose which field fascinates me. Second, since social work and criminal justice work synchronously, it would be to my benefit to have a vast understanding of the criminal justice system of the city I hope to work in.…

Growing up, I lived in a predominantly Latino community. I was always around people who shared my same culture, beliefs, and background. Rarely did I ever experience challenges against my culture and beliefs. As I grew older, and attained more experiences, I became aware of the problems in my community, and in the world. Just recently, I learned how imperative it is for me to embrace my culture and to help my community. For this reason, I was inspired to help make a difference. Over the past few years, I have committed myself to various community service organizations; and have become more active within my Latino community. My biggest community service commitments so far have been with the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…

This week’s readings emphasized different obstacles that social workers have to overcome, such as a changing workforce, the way that different cultures are addressed, and what constitutes racism. Historically, we have seen the workforce become more diverse. The diversification of the workplace does not necessarily mean that the workplace is fair, however. Many inequalities and injustices exist within the workplace still. A goal of a good social worker is to overcome and fix such inequalities. The graying of the workforce, meaning that the median age of workers is becoming higher, only means that elderly workers are dictated more and more by policies created by the government and the social security and pension changes. The feminization of the workforce means that more women are entering the workforce, but they are struggling to reach the heights of their careers that men have reached. The changing complexion of the workplace is that more visible racial/ethnic minorities are entering the workforce,…
