I disagree with decriminalizing marijuana. Marijuana has been seen as a treatment for many medical issues. But, then we have to take into consideration that legalizing marijuana has many negative affects to society. Marijuana would become a risk to public safety, damage to health, jeopardize young people, lead to use of other illegal drugs and cost tax dollars. We could theorize marijuana to alcohol, both of these drugs risk adds burdens to public funds (state funds). If marijuana was legalized it would have a subsequent increase in addiction.     Marijuana is not as dangerous of a drug as some others that are available on the market for treating diseases. I personally know a friend whose family member was prescribed highly addictive painkillers after a back surgery. He then became addicted to them and was constantly having “accidents” that would end him up in the hospital just to get that feeling he was looking for, he even went as far as to crash his car into a tree resulting in his death. I believe that marijuana should become completely legal and be regulated just like tobacco. In other countries you can go to coffee shops and purchase marijuana and products that contain THC the chemical in marijuana that makes you feel high. I believe that like alcohol and tobacco marijuana can be one of those drugs that is easily taxed and generate a large amount of revenue for our government. Also it would save the government billions since many people less people would be going to jail for marijuana lessening the amount of money spent on these people in prison and the many other legal fees that come with prosecuting and detaining people.     There are many opponents to the idea of legalizing marijuana though states such as California, Arizona and many other states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes (Barnes, 2000).
