Pros And Cons Of Candidate Selection
I believe the most effective selection method for an entity’s chief executive is through appointment. I also believe that the current structure of the United States does not allow for the appointment of the president due to the current system of checks and balances and separation of powers in place in American government. While the structure of the United States government could be altered to allow for appointment, it wouldn’t solve any major issues in candidate selection. I presume that the best method for the United States to select a president is through an election, and the best method of determining a CEO of a private company is appointment.

The election process for the president has many pros and cons attributed to it, though it remains the proven method for selecting who should wield the powers of the Executive Branch. While many may not agree, especially in the current election cycle, the election presents the candidates with the highest percentage of the country backing them. and these appointments are usually in line with the political views of the individual or group selecting the appointee. This is not dissimilar to the appointment of a private company’s CEO by a board of directors. A benefit to this appointment style is that the process becomes more streamlined, less costly, and allows the selectors to have a much higher content knowledge of their candidates than the voting public may have in a United States election. The downside to appointment is the board of directors can be extremely partial to certain candidates for personal gain and an appointment vote can be swayed fairly easily. This could lead to a selection of a CEO who is not the best candidate for the company, but the best candidate for a specific group of

    ELECTORAL COLLEGE : The reason why we use the electoral college in the U.S. is to decide who is going to be the next president. The presidency is not always won by popular vote. The founding fathers opted for an electoral college , because they wanted the president to be chosen by those who were well informed ,and qualified enough to have the ability to chose a president. The main argument against the electoral college is that the presidency should be won by popular vote alone. It shouldn’t be that one candidate could win the popular vote, and still lose the election. One of the pros of the electoral college is that the system persuades candidates to promote themselves in small and big cities of the battle states. Another pro of the system is if a recount was needed it could often be centered to the specific state (s) . For example in 2000 a recount was proposed in the state of Florida between Al gore and George w. Bush, if not for the electoral college the recount may have had to take place in the nation. One of the cons of the electoral college is that it has a major possibility of not representing the popular opinion , by that I mean the voting system has the hazard of a “faithless” elector a person who is pledged to vote for a specific party s candidate but votes for an other . The electoral college has preformed its function for over 200 years by ensuring that the president of the U.S. has both sufficient poplar support to govern and his support is sufficiently distributed throughout the country to enable him to govern effectively.     The Electoral College is a process that began as part of the original design, of the U.S. Constitution and was established by the founding fathers as a compromise between the election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote. As we all know, Americans were given a serious reminder in 2000 that the president is not elected by nationwide popular vote, but by a majority of the electoral votes. It’s an example of indirect election as opposed to direct election by U.S. citizens, (i.e. the members of the U.S. House of Representatives.) Should the Electoral College be reformed or done away with altogether, has been a hotly debated subject since one of the first ever public polls, on the subject matter, was given in 1944?     I think that the Electoral College is not a fair way of choosing the President because even though we are the ones voting for the president in the end THEY choose who the president will be in the end. Our vote is more of a reference and it’s taken into consideration, because one candidate can win the popular vote but it can end up that the other candidate wins. Each vote should count and count equally. We should be able to choose who WE want to run OUR country because it is OUR country. The people’s opinion should always be taken into consideration and it should matter. In a democracy majority rules so whoever the people choose is who we should get. Is it not our choice? The Electoral College is basically a way for the government to control everything as usual. States should be treated as equally as possible when it comes to choosing someone to run how we decide things for potentially the next two years. The Electoral College creates the possibility for the loser of the popular vote to win the electoral vote. If that’s the case then there is more of a re4ason for the people to ask, why do we vote? Or why does it matter? Everyone pushes us to vote, vote, vote but when you look into it and see that your vote may not matter then it discourages those people. The choice of who we want to run should be our choice, because then if something bad happens then we only really have ourselves to blame.     Focus: What is the role of the CEO in a large, complex enterprise? What makes a CEO effective? According to Porter and Nohria (2008), a CEO is the epitome of leadership, who exercises ultimate power, and is responsible for making the most critical choices facing an organization. However, even though the CEO is powerful, multiple constituencies can exercise power as well, i.e. the board of directors. This paper is based on observations and findings from a workshop, which was an intensive two-day program for newly appointed CEOs, developed at Harvard Business School in the mid 1990s. The results stems from observations of more than 100 CEO’s of large, complex organizations. The CEO and the function of leadership CEO’s must ensure that the functions involved in managing any organization are performed to a high standard. Several functions involved in modern management practice have been developed, which can be divided into these categories: 1. Direction – Setting the strategy for the organization, and setting specific financial goals that the organization will seek to achieve. In addition, identifying organizational values and ethical standards should be regarded a part of setting direction. 2. Coordination – Setting the stage for the organizational structure, in which both structure and processes must align with the overall organizational strategy. 3. Commitment – A leader has to provide financial and other incentives to ensure broad commitment to its mission, which must align with strategy and goals. 4. Implementation – Systems, such as budgeting, management development and performance reviews are required to ensure timely implementation of the organizations goals and strategy to the highest possible standards. 5.
