Professionalism In The Workplace Essay
Professionalism can mean many different things to many different people. For the business man, professionalism might mean wearing a fancy suit while traveling to their high paying job. To a doctor, it might mean performing a successful surgery. The point is that there is no one correct way to define professionalism. Depending on your profession, personality, or your surroundings, many people will come up with very different meanings. I have my own perception of “professionalism,” and I hope I can let this perception help me in the workplace and my entire future to come. To me, professionalism means a sense of maturity. If I was looking to hire someone that was “professional,” the first thing that I would be looking for is someone that does not think of themselves being greater than everyone else. The good thing about this is that maturity is usually easy to spot. Especially this day in age, the way people dress and talk can easily set them apart. Employers today want to find people that give off a sense of maturity from the moment they walk through the interview door to the shake of the hand at the end. I have always thought of myself as being mature, but one time I can specifically remember acting professionally was at my high school Kairos retreat. Overall, the sense of maturity in professionalism is present both in the classroom and in the workplace. This is a trait that should not be only a part of one setting or the other. On the other hand, there are also traits of professionalism that should be in the workplace but not necessarily in the classroom. One of the biggest ones in my opinion is clothing. What you wear on the job says a lot about your professionalism. Yes, this is also true in the classroom, but I think most people do not think of it as much in

    In our textbook, Business Communications: Polishing Your Professional Presence, professionalism is described, as the qualities that make you appear business like in the workplace.
