Pro Gay Speech

Gay marriage is one the most controversial issues of today’s society, especially in America. I wrote my speech about gay marriage and why it should be allowed in the United States. If civil unions of male couples were legal 600 years ago, why shouldn’t they be in today’s society? Back in the day they found legal contracts from medieval France that basically meant brotherhood. In the contract, the brothers pledged to live together with a saying, “one bread, one wine, and one purse.” This meaning, that all of the couple’s goods became joint property. The same type of legal contract included arrangements in which two or more biological brothers inherited the family home from their parents and would continue living together, not necessarily being gay, but just a contract stating they are together. The sexuality of the couple was of no importance to the community. Some were, in fact, homosexual yet did not matter. They loved each other and the community accepted it. If marriage is between two individuals who love, trust, and admire one another they should be given the right to share their life together with the same legal rights equally as everyone else, regardless of whom it is they love. The main arguments against gay marriage consists of the fact marriage is suppose to be an institution between one man and one woman, same sex couples don’t have the right environment to raise children in, and gay relationships are immoral. The most often heard argument is marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman. Who is to say what marriage is and who should be denied from it? All the reasons people come up with against it is really more like an expression of prejudice rather than any kind of real argument. Other opinions say gay couples don’t have the right environment to raise a child in. Even though there are murders and convicted felons of all sorts who are allowed freely to marry and have children everyday. So if children are really the issue, why are they allowed to have them? Many scientific studies have shown that the outcome of the children raised in homes of gay and lesbian couples are just as good as those of straight couples. Psychologists have said, “What makes the difference is the love and commitment of the parents, not their gender.” The studies are very clear about that. The studies also focus on the fact that gay people are just as capable of loving children as fully as anyone else. Another argument against gays and lesbians come down to gay relationships being immoral. I would love for you to tell me who says it’s immoral? Scott Bridstrup once said “ I always thought freedom of religion implied the right to freedom from religion as well. The bible has absolutely no standing in American law, as was made clear by the first amendment.” Plus, not all religions have a problem with homosexuality. Buddhism for example celebrates gay marriage freely. If one believes in religious freedom, they must realize that gay marriage can’t be argued with religion. Now, other REAL reasons people are against gay marriage are just because they’re not comfortable with it, gay marriage is unnatural, and the thought of gay marriage is repulsive. For people just being uncomfortable with the idea is ridiculous. Do you think southern whites were comfortable with letting blacks sit in the front of the bus? Years ago that was just wrong, nowadays barely anyone sees it as a problem. It’s nothing more then being prejudice against gays. Another reason people are against gay marriage is because they think it’s unnatural. There are so many gays and lesbians, that nowadays it’s so common how could people think it’s unnatural? Last but not least, many believe gay marriage to be repulsive, but would it surprise you that some homosexuals consider heterosexual sex repulsive also? It’s all what you believe and everyone has a right to their opinion. Do you think just because gays and lesbians think of heterosexual sex being repulsive, it should be a reason for them not to get married? Gays and lesbians are still family to someone and you should always accept someone for who they are because they’re still people, and all people have rights.
