In the eighth grade, I auditioned for a youth production of “Once Upon a Mattress” at the Morgan-Wixson Theater. It was my first time auditioning for a show in which I wasn't guaranteed a role. Being certain of my abilities and craving a challenge, I auditioned and landed a role in the ensemble. A week into rehearsal one of the leads dropped out, and the director called back members of the ensemble to replace her. After performing just a quarter of the monologue I was recast as a lead character. However, I was oblivious to the stress this character would end up putting on my life. I had only ever played romantic leads who had sweet demeanors, and this character had anything but. The villain and antagonist of the story, Queen Aggravain is an…

Lena Lingard intrigues me. She’s gentle even though she’s lived on the farm her entire life and she manages to make the littlest things exciting with her charisma. In ways, her adventurousness and excitement make her similar to Tony. However, they differ in that Ántonia possesses a quiet beauty and inner strength that contrasts with Lena’s liveliness. It’s strange-- I dream the same dream “a great many times, and it [is] always the same. I [am] in a harvest-field full of shocks, and I [am] lying against one of them. Lena Lingard [comes] across the stubble barefoot, in a short skirt, with a curved reaping-hook in her hand, and she [is] flushed like the dawn, with a kind of luminous rosiness all about her. She [sits] down beside me, [turns] to me with a soft sigh and said, ‘Now they are all gone, and I can kiss you as much as I like.’ I...wish I could have this flattering dream about Ántonia, but I never [do].” (109) I love Ántonia and her steady independence but I cannot see her in my dreams in…

In the novel All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy illustrates the coming-of-age protagonist, John Grady Cole, who impulsively decides to travel to Mexico in search of an adventurous lifestyle. Although a teenager, John Grady Cole reveals rather matured behaviors towards his fellow companions, but he preserves the notion that he has control over everything. This very attitude backfires in severe consequences, in which John Grady Cole is essentially powerless. Subsequently, his ideals of cowboy life confronts the reality of adulthood because John Grady Cole loses his most prized attribute -- the child-like belief of…

This character is Abigail Kirk, who is the protagonist of the story. For the first ten years her life, she was Lynette Kirk, “happy as a lark”, and “hot-headed rag of a child”. Robert B. Parker’s protagonist, Spenser, was a cop ahead of his time. Articulate, well-spoken, and well-read, Spenser had a college degree. He often quoted famous literary figures including his namesake, Edmund Spenser (“with an S like the poet”), author of the epic poem, The Faerie Queene. Today, more and more police agencies require at least some post-secondary education to qualify for a job on the force. The reason is simple: cable TV and Hollywood stereotypes aside today’s cops need solid, reliable writing skills. Yes, you read that right. Cops know how to write more than tickets. Here are seven strategies you can use to become a better writer:…

I chose to do my audience analysis on Philippa Gregory’s books The White Princess. The book is a historical fiction book based on the lives of King Henry the 7th and Elizabeth of York. The primary audience for this book is for people who are interesting about the history and the people of the British monarchy. The reason that I believe that this is the primary audience for this book is because most people do not want to learn about Elizabeth of York unless they are interested in her and her life. Another reason that I think that this is the primary audience is because this book follows the history and issues that were going on during that time. People that would want to read this book are people that are interested about the royals back then and what happened in their lives and the issue and threats that they were facing at the time. For example, the book talks about how King Henry the 7th had issues with people pretending to be one Elizabeth’s brothers who were killed in the tower. A few young men came forward during that time and pretended that they were one of the brothers…

Arya Stark is a bonafide tomboy. In the first episode of the show, Arya is watching her brother bran practice with his bow and arrow. When Bran goes to take a shot after being teased by his brothers, Arya shoots from several feet behind Bran and makes a bullseye. The entire time I was reading this I was thinking “This is me!” When my family would go to the beach, I would go with my stepdad and uncle and follow them far out into the ocean while my mom and sisters stayed closer to shore. As a kid, I would constantly play in the dirt and with bugs and other creepy crawlies, I could find. Sansa, during season one and the early part of season two, would constantly tell Arya that she was being un-lady like. (Game of Thrones). Arya’s father even said, “Ah, Arya.…

Sansa Stark, the eldest daughter of Lady Catelyn and Lord Eddard Stark, is introduced as a girl that very much fits the stereotype of a highborn lady in fantasy literature. Martin first introduces Sansa as a girl whose work is pretty as she is (68). This sentence sets the tone for Sansa’s character for the rest of the novel as the first information the reader learns about her is that her work is pretty rather than done well. The usage of “pretty” in describing Sansa tells the reader to focus on her appearance before anything else. Sansa is the perfect example of a medieval girl of noble birth as she excels in many of the lady-like hobbies:. As one would expect of a highborn lady, she is not good at activities generally associated with highborn men in their society, like riding and calculating.…
