Predator And Prey Lab Report
The purpose of this lab is to observe the relationship between predator and prey populations as well as to observe the effects of competition in regards to space/habitat and food supply. It is also to observe some of the major factors that contribute to population increases and decreases and to learn how to plot data to observe patterns.

I can determine the relationship between the predator and prey by analyzing the correlation between the two. I believe that the results will show that the predator and prey populations are dependant on each other. I predict that as the mouse pop. rises, the owl pop. will also rise because there is more food and can then reproduce. Then when the mouse pop. drops because of lack of space and increase in predators,

I was able to identify the relationship between the owl and mouse populations by analyzing the graph. It was somewhat like a mirror effect where when the mouse population increased, the owl population would also increased and when the mouse population decreased, the owl population would also decreased and then the cycle would repeat. The factors that most contributed to the population increases and decreases were immigration, death, and competition. When there were no mice or owls left, 4 mice or 1 owl would be immigrated in which increased populations. When the mouse population increased, it would be because the owl population was low and they had less competition for space so they could spread out to prevent the owls from catching 3+ mice and when it decreased it was because there were more owls and too much competition for space in the habitat. When the owl pop. increased it was because there was a lot of mice and not much competition for food and when it decreased it was because there was too much competition for food and not enough …show more content…
My results would help them have a better understanding of how animal populations work and the different factors that come into play such as how population can decrease when death and emigration is greater than birth and immigration and how population can increase when death and emigration is less than birth and immigration. If there was a sudden increase or decrease of an animal in a certain area, the person investigating it would also find these results useful. These results could help them pinpoint the the reason for the sudden influx or drop in population by looking at the factors and graph. Reasons for such a sudden increase would be perhaps immigration and that their previous habitat was too crowded, didn’t have enough food and had too much competition. Reasons for a sudden decrease could be that the animals emigrated somewhere else, too much competition in that area, died of disease or that there were invasive species using up all the resources and they would know about these reasons if they were to look at our

The object of this experiment is to determine how changing the size of the beak of a finch will affect the population as well as the growth rate of the finch’s beak. The reason for the experiment is to evaluate evolution and how it affects the finch’s population, and how natural selection is always present in life. In this experiment I will show that the finch will continue to evolve until its beak has reached the optimal size for sustaining life, when changing the beak size to a much larger size we will see that the finch will have no need for further evolution of its beak and that its population will become much more stable and consistent throughout the years.…

This scenario is an absolute disaster; I could not even imagine the possibility of having 20 mice roaming around in my attic. Initially, the cat would catch the five slowest mice. Then, I believe that eventually the cat would catch the five medium fast mice. Now the real problem starts, mice can reproduce at a phenomenal rate. Let’s assume that of the 10 mice left, five are males and five are females. "At 6 weeks old the female can become pregnant. [The] gestation [period for mice] is 3 weeks, and under optimal conditions the female can become pregnant again immediately after giving birth” (AFRMA, n.d., para.1). To make matters worse a female mouse can have anywhere from 5-10 babies in a litter, so the five remaining female mice could potentially…

Our group simulation looked at survivorship of predators, who were spoons, and what happens if restrictions were placed on predators. One predator was restricted by a 1ft x 1ft square, or tile, where 50 prey, or beans, were placed inside the square with the predator. If the beans were pushed out of the square, the spoon(s) who were restricted would not be able to eat the bean because it was out of their forging range. On the outside, another 50 beans were placed for the spoons (predators) who were not restricted, these predators were allowed to eat both inside and outside of the square. After each 20 second round, the amount of prey captured for restricted and non-restricted were counted separately yo determine the amount both sides of predators would have in a 6 binding cap from the start.…

Oliver begins this essay by contrasting the horned owls commanding presence compared to that of other species. The saw-whet and Screech owl are described as “delicate.” The saw- whet is even compared to a big soft month. Owl pellets can provide evidence of the owl’s dietary habits and its role in its environment. Owl pellets have been used for scientific study of small mammals and their distribution. Since the owls are collecting, the scientist must locate the owls to obtain the pellets, and then study the skulls and bones of small prey living in an area. From these bones the prey species can be counted and identifies. These owls play in the role of limitating the population size of its prey. They prey species that is most plentiful in the area will be the species most likely to be captured and consumed by the owl.…

In the prison documentary Predators at Prey, we learn about the daily challenges correctional officers face every day. The Lebanon Correctional Institution, located in Ohio, is a rehabilitation based prison that focuses on inmate reentry by offering various services. Just like most other prisons, correctional officers at this institution have to deal with individuals who have committed murder, sex crimes, and drug related crimes. As a result, stress is seen to manifest in different forms in an environment such as this one. Sanford Whitlow, a correctional officer of twelve years, made an interesting observation of correctional officers being unsung heroes who never receive credit for dealing with the worst people in society. Hence, the…

Have You ever wondered why you rarely see any wild animals when you go to the mountains and then when you are driving back home, you almost hit a deer? Or how we see coyotes walk down our streets and turkeys standing in the middle of the road. This is the result of the overpopulation of wild animals living in the suburbs. Wildlife living in suburbia has become an arising problem and many people do not know how it started and why they even choose to live along side us. In my report, I will address the reasons and underlying causes for the existence of wildlife in suburbia and what their impact is on the communities that they inhabit.…
