Practicum Observation
For my practicum observation, I went into a second grade inclusion classroom at Sharon Elementary School in Robbinsville School District. The structure of the classroom was co-teaching with a special education teacher and a general education teacher. On the day I observed, I was only able to see the special education teacher in action in the classroom. She was able to describe to me how a typical day works, and I was better able to understand how an inclusion classroom operates. The special education teacher, Heather Bhatt, works alongside Joe Balcewicz. When I interviewed her during the observation, Mrs. Bhatt was able to explain how a typical math lesson is implemented. One of them will teach a mini lesson, and then they will both move around the room to support students on different academic levels. She then explained how each educator would collaborate with one another regarding the students’ academic challenges. This allows them to create strategies and set goals which would assist both the special education teacher, as well as the general education teacher, in understanding each students independent working levels.

From my observations, I could tell how rewarding the job of a special education teacher is, and I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Mrs. Bhatt was able to get results from her students, and I was able to take away a new understanding of what it means to be in the field of special education. Even though schools may be changing some of their practices, along with placing students and teachers in different classroom environments, special education is a very important area. Having the opportunity to observe the inclusion classroom gave me even more insight into the field of education, and more validation in my future

    I think that there are many advantages and disadvantages of inclusion in the regular classroom.
