Practice 1 Productivity And Rewards
TRY 1:
The main topic of the reading and the lecture is the relationship between productivity and rewards. The reading passage believes that reward system increase the productivity of workers significantly. On the other hand, the lecture stands against the system of rewards based on people experence and studies.
First, the reading passage tells that inorder to make employees work hard and improve productivity is to reward them with money, company stocks, special privilages, and many other ways. Furthermore, managerial consultants assures that such incentives improves employee attitudes, motivation, and productivity. Moreover, a well-known academic text on incentives points out that "the closer the link between jop performance and rewards, the greater the motivational effect." On the other hand, the lecture goes on to say that many experenced managers belives that rewarding dont increase productivity. People dont want to be rewarded, instead, they want to be paid and getting respect from the company. More important, many studies shows that reward system makes less productivity rather than more. Employees also belive that they are controlled, and they dont like being manipulated. Furthermore, the more the employees desire the reward and they fail to get it, the more disappointed they become, and that is away of punishments.
Second, the reading assures that the structure of reward system must be correct and reward should have high value for employees in order to increase the motivation. However, the lecture mentions that productivity schemes might even reduce the amount and quality of work, and could also damages the relationship between the employee and the supervisor. For example, if an employee faces a problem in work, instead of talking to his supervisor to fix the problem, he would conceal it to avoid getting bad rating and losing the reward.

    For the short run it is clear that tying reward to performance is the best way of motivating employees. However in the long run trusting employees and valuing their performance can be done in other ways such as a pad on the back and say job well done or acknowledging and thanking them in the monthly newsletter of the firm.
