PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION
The "Practic-al Physis5 for Degree Students" is designed to co\rer the syllabi of the B.Sc. Pass and Subsidiary and B. Scl@ngineering) examinations of the different Unlrrersities of pakistan. our long experience in teaching physics and conducting practical classes has acquainted us with the various difficulties=that the students face in performing experiments. In this textbook attempts have been made to guide the students so that they may proceed to record data systematically and then correlate them to get the results. strbject mafter of the book has been presented in i'simple manner so that the students may independently perform the experiments without the help of the teachers. At the end of each experiment relevent questions and their answers harre been provided, thus clarilying the theoretical aspect of the experiment. lables are provided at the end of each eiperiment. Hor,vever, it should be remembered that they are purely suggestive and there is nothing special about any particular form of tl-bulation. Tables of physical constants and logarithmic and trigonometrical tables have been provided at the end of the book for ready reference.

    In order for this equipment to assist one in measuring the speed of sound, the speaker and microphone are positioned inside the hollow tube with the speaker stationary at one end. The microphone is able to be moved and set a chosen distance from the speaker, from almost touching to 1 meter. The signal generator is connected to the speaker by a pair of wires. From this pair of wires, another pair of wires connects the signal generator to the frequency meter. A set of wires also run from the signal generator to the oscilloscope. A separate set of wires is connected from the oscilloscope to the microphone inside the tube. The set up of the equipment allows for the output of the signal meter to be read and measured by the frequency meter while being led to the speaker. This input causes the speaker to vibrate, which produces sound waves inside the tube. These sound waves, picked up by the microphone, are then sent to the oscilloscope as a signal. A pattern is displayed on the screen of the oscilloscope. With the signals in phase, the patterned displayed is a straight diagonal line. With…

Follow the example of the presentation given to you for the other activities. The lab report is worth 30 points toward your lab grade. A lab report should contain the following components. Title: Should identify the physics involved. (Note: Lab 2 and Activity 7 are not titles) Purpose: Clearly stated. (To accomplish what? By what means?) Theory: This section presents and explains the fundamental physical laws and principles used in the experiment. Introduce and explain the equations that you will use in your analysis. When appropriate, include diagrams to support and illustrate the concepts you are presenting. This section must convince us that you understood what you did and why. Procedure: Method used to fulfill the purpose. Cookbook presentation of exactly what you did. Data: The measurements or readings that you gathered. This is usually in the form of a list or table. All quantities should include the proper units. Calculations: Include a sheet showing all your calculations that you used to get from your data to your result. A sample calculation should be provided when using Excel. This is especially helpful for grading. In this way we can double-check your work when your results are questionable. Results/Analysis: Tabulate the secondary quantities that you calculated from your raw data. Present well labeled graphs including the proper units.
