Political Philosophy of the Philippines
ANALYSIS OF THE PRESENT POLITICAL PHILOSPHY
(PRESIDENT BENIGNO SIMEON “NOYNOY” AQUINO JR.)
2011

Graft and Corruption has always been a big problem for the Philippines. Many presidents (if not all) in the past, are solidly accused of creating and approving projects of which the budget is way more than the necessary expenses and way more than the outcome. Some are accused of accepting bribes from various groups of big syndicates that operate lottery illegally. Some of these presidents were greatly affected by all these accusations about their governance that they resort to forced resignation, but some were brave enough to stand by their government and stay seated in the throne despite all the allegations thrown against them.

I know that this administration has been very consistent in telling the people about their prime focus for the next six years of the Aquino governance, and that is a government that is free of corruption. From the time of the 2010 presidential elections until now, it has always been the greatest advocacy of President Aquino. For this year’s State of the Nation Address, the President took time to emphasize all the lapses and anomalies of the previous administration that were discovered in the early part of the present administration. There were investigations and inspections done to know where all the money of the national budget had gone. And they discovered that there are a lot of questionable releases of budgets. President Aquino also shared their solution to all these arising questions like appointing a Truth commission, who will lead the investigations regarding all the questionable budget approval of the previous administration. Also, included in the State of the Nation Address are the different strategies that are considered by the government to answer the rising problem of unemployment in the country, the plans for the Philhealth, the National Land Use Bill, and many more.

For me, this is a good way to start the 6-year

Aquino had warned that his speech today would shock Filipinos. Addressing the combined membership of the Senate and House of Representatives, he alleged various wrongdoings by the Arroyo administration, saying: “For a long time, our country lost its way on the crooked path.” He said he would give the order this week for the creation of a “truth commission” to look into irregularities in the Arroyo administration.…

First of all, let me define what the word “epal” means in local Filipino slang lingo. “Epal” is defined, by the Urban Dictionary, as a very annoying person; a person who always loves to butt in other people's conversation; attention grabber. My evaluation will mainly focus on the attention grabbing characteristics of being “epal” of most politicians or our so called “public servants” in the Philippines. Going around the streets of the Philippines, not only in big cities, there is one thing that will constantly be there, be it in waiting sheds, covered courts, and most of the time, attached to tangled electric or telephone wires. I’m talking about all these names either printed on tarpaulins or painted on permanent structures. These are the names of the politicians who, apparently, were the people behind the building of the barangay’s new covered court. This is what I call legitimately “epal”. They are the epitome of what “epal” really means.…

The United states now won the Spanish-American war. Now what? Continuing to take more, this was American's supreme goal. The reason the U.S. "purchased" Philippines because this was cheaper than continuing war with the Spanish. However, U.S seems to be putting threats on Philippines rather than colonizing them. Disagreements rose amongst the Filipino, and this is where the U.S. policy comes in.…

To begin with, I am not one of the numerous pro-Aquino Filipinos, neither I’m a pro-Arroyo, but I’m not saying I’m against him. I believe he is ethical but I think he is not that effective as a leader and thus I do not totally trust his capacity to handle our country. But well, he stood out during the elections and I had no choice but to respect and accept it for the sake of our country.…

Change could not be done overnight either six years is not enough but even if the president is strangled by these truths he is still persistent to continue what he started; whoever people he might meet head-on in the process, whatever cost may it take. This was the one my contemplation of the opening statement of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) held last July 22, 2013 in Batasan Pambansa Complex. His very promising statements captures the heart of the masses for it gave confidence for the many that the president himself is ready to combat corrupt public administrators and it pledged hope for the citizens of the country, an undying hope for a enhanced change and a better country. The fourth years of his administration has started and so let’s scrutinize what news he brings about the state of the country.…

It is the fourth state of the nation address of our President, Noynoy Aquino. His term is said to be the uncorrupt government we had here in the Philippines. I can say that it is one of the best sona I heard because it uses our own language which is tagalog for all of us understand what it is instead of doing it in English. Pnoy mentioned how We progresses in the field of health, employment, agriculture, education, fishing and etc. Corrupt officials are also ejected in his term, those who make Filipinos experienced poverty by means of enriching themselves without thinking that the money they used to put in their pocket are for Filipinos nor for their own sake. As I observed, it is really true that there are changes and some progress we had and an example of it is the decreasing amount of our debt in the world bank. Imagine on the previous government the amount of it is too high that even those Filipino child that are not born yet have debts already, it is worse. He also tackled those workers for example are the farmers, fishermen and the coconut farmers that are considered one of the poorest Filipino considering that they contribute much in our country. We can’t pretend that are government inherited too many problems from the previous government and Pnoy even admitted to himself that one nap, one year and even his whole term can’t resolve all the problems We, Filipinos are experiencing. Yes, it is true and I agree with our President. Many people that for me are considered to be ignorant or we can say those who are knowledge less comments a lot mostly are negative without knowing what is happening or even what is really the problem. Many disagreed that employment increases because they don’t even have their job, some says that sona are just for the pleasure of the president and believe that everything on it was not true. Too many speculations and rallys which doesn’t help us, hence traffic and noise pollution, some says that they are fond of creating rallys for them…

Is there a Filipino Philosophy? I read an essay titled “Doing Philosophy in the Philippines” by Dr. Afredo P. Co and his answer to this question can be summarized this way: Since the Philippines is a melting pot of cultures brought about by invasions, missionaries, trade etc. the Philippines has no distinctive and native philosophy to speak of. He goes on to say that the Philippines is a Spanish creation and an amalgam of east, west, north, south, Christian, pagan, Malayan, Muslim etc. cultures. “Ours is the identity of the new age—ambivalent, polymorphous, processual, always becoming.” According to Dr. Co, philosophy as a formal discourse is a Spanish import. Dr. Co is writing with a postmodern perspective. (His essay is part of an essay collection titled “Two Filipino Thomasian --from the University of Stro. Thomas and not Aquinas--Philosophers on Postmodernism.”)…
