My Beloved - Annabel Lee

“Annabel Lee” was the last poem that Poe composed, and was first published in November, 1849, a month or so after his death. Poe once said, “The death of a beautiful woman is the most poetic topic in the world”, that’s “Annabel Lee.” The poem is about a beautiful, but painful memory. The speaker of the poem is remembering his long-lost love, Annabel Lee. The narrator, who fell in love with Annabel Lee when they were young, has a love for her so strong that even angels are envious. He retains his love for her even after her death. The poem has since become one of Poe’s most popular works.
Poe begins the poem by painting a romantic and fairy tale story, telling us that the story we are about to hear happened “many a year ago”. Akin to a fairy story, the author takes us to a kingdom by the sea that existed in the remote past, when both he and his beloved Annabel Lee were.
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;

In stanza two, Poe tells us about the mature love he and Annabel Lee share, even though they are just children. By using climax, which is a Poe specialty, the story takes a dark turn when the angels become jealous of their love and result in killing Annabel Lee. Poe gives us a feeling their love was not welcomed by all. He blames her death on the angles because they envied her – his beloved. But Poe is so sure of their love, saying it is stronger than ‘those who were older then we” and “far wiser than we.” The author paints a picture of Annabel Lee who is gentle and persistent in her love, and she has complex emotion that may darken or complicate her love. The third stanza adds more emotion by stressing the tragic and irreversible nature of her death. Poe’s use of repetition, speaks intimately with the voiceless dead as well as with the

In Poe’s life both his mom and foster mom died and his 13 year old cousin Virginia all died. Annabel Lee is about him and his lover Annabel Lee and how much he loved her and then Annabel dying. Annabel Lee could be about Virginia. “But we loved with a love that was more than love” is a quote from Annabel Lee. Finally, one of the major overarching themes presented throughout both pieces of literature is love versus death and everlasting love. This is portrayed in Annabel Lee when Poe states, “That the wind came out of the cloud by night, chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.” After Poe affirms Annabel’s death, he continues to speak of his love and passion for her just as Humbert does for Lolita right before he dies. This is a theme that is also seen in many other literary pieces and proves that love can be everlasting, even when death is a…

    Poe utilizes the raven as a means of placing a dark tone on his poem when the narrator asks if “[he] shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-/ Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” (94-95). The raven responds with “‘Nevermore’” (96). The widower questions the raven if he will ever get the chance to hold his wife again, and the raven replies that he will not, showing Poe’s tone of despair and misery. On the other hand, Poe creates a hopeful tone in “Annabel Lee” when, at the end of the poem, the narrator says, “And neither the angels in Heaven above/ Nor the demons down under the sea/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (30-33). Declaring that even death cannot tear him and his love apart, the narrator believes that their souls will forever be together, no matter if she is in Heaven or Hell. This is much unlike “The Raven” in which the widower learns that he will never see his wife again. Poe’s tone in “Annabel Lee” provides a more peaceful atmosphere regarding the death of a loved one than that of “The Raven”. Both poems illustrate the ambiguities and uncertainties that that surround the death of a loved one and offer reactions to such…

    Edgar Allan Poe's view on poetry is that all poems must be a creation of beauty. In his eyes, depression and sadness is beautiful. He thinks that the death of a young beautiful woman is itself full of beauty. Poe’s way of beauty is a one of a kind compared to other poets and writers. In both "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven", Poe writes about this so-called beauty.…

    In the second stanza, Poe gives a time frame in which the poem took place. In the first line of the second stanza Poe lets his audience knows that he and Annabel Lee were in fact children: “I was a child and she was a child”, when their love first staked its claim. This line also lets his readers know how unusual their relationship was, but at the same time it seems unstable because their love took hold at such a young age as indicated by the last two…

    In Emily Dickinson's poem "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain", Dickinson describes what seems to be a funeral in her mind. When one thinks of a funeral, they usually think of a ceremony for a person who has died. This funeral that Dickinson is experiencing in her brain, is actually a funeral for the death of her mind. Emily Dickinson describes events that usually take place at a funeral but the ideas she pitches to the reader doesn't exactly exemplify your ideal funeral. She tells the reader how there are mourners, a service, lifting of a box implying it is a coffin and nobody is being burried. In Emily Dickenson's poem, the reader can elaborate upon elements of poetry such as imagery, symbolism, diction, and metaphor that create a better sense of understanding.…

    Annabel Lee is a short, yet fascinating poem about young love and a love lost. In Annabel Lee, the narrator describes a love that he and the young maiden Annabel Lee have for each other as so great the angels in heaven blow a cold wind out of a cloud that makes Annabel Lee sick and eventually kills her. But their love is so great that no one on earth, heaven, or hell can separate their souls from each other, not even death. The use of an afterlife in this piece is obvious since the angels in heaven were the ones who took the narrator’s loved ones away from him. “Yes! --- that was the reason (as all men know,…

    The poem, Annabel Lee, is written by Edgar Allan Poe few months before his death and thinks about his wife as he wrote it. We can see that Edgar related Annabel Lee to his dead wife who died young at her age. Poe’s attitude toward death is cold, visual, and supernatural, yet the loneliness, the heartbreak, and the suffering can be won by the power of love and nothing will stop him from remembering his dearest one. I’m guessing that this isn’t a Christian poem because angles or seraphs are the antagonists in the poem. Or, is it because he is a pessimistic person and has to blame someone or something for the death? For example, in line 21 and 22 of Annabel Lee, “The angels, not half so happy in heaven, went envying her and me” shows the narrator’s view of what the angles felt. He succeeds in making the reader, me, feel what he feels because his use of vocabularies, the setting, and the mood just matches up with one another. The meter helped him in establishing the poem’s mood because it gave me more of the interest and added up the emotions in the poem.…

    This was five months before he died (October 1849). In my own opinion I believe that this poem had no direct audience but was more of a good-bye letter to the world. That the pain of his existence without his wife Virginia had grown too much over too long of a time. He confided in the world with this poem, about how separated from his wife he felt and how difficult and lost he felt in life. All he thought about was her, how irrational life felt without her and that all he wanted to do was lie beside her and fall asleep, to be with her forever. He continuously tries to back up his claim that him and the character Annabel Lee are forever in union (Stanza 4 and 5). In a modern society, people would interpret someone lying beside a sepulchre as a trace of necrophilia, but through poetry and the genre of gothic romanticism, this is a sign of true undying love. Another reason why I think there is no direct audience is because the narrator almost seems like he is talking to himself trying to rationalize his thoughts to accept the death of his beloved. That he is not talking to anyone in particular or even referencing to a reader. There is no obvious intention to give the reader some understanding of the plot, setting or situation. Just a cluster of stanza’s with a continuation of feelings towards the death. Poe is trying to talk himself out of the separation anxiety and desperate loneliness he is feeling. Thus, no direct…

    On the literal level the poem starts off with Poe’s persona remembering his love, Annabel Lee. Many years ago the persona and Annabel Lee were both children who lived in a kingdom by the sea. The angels brought a strong wind and chilled Annabel Lee to death. Her highborn kinsman came and took her away from the persona and put her in a sepulchre. Even through death their love was still strong. Angels and demons cold not separate their souls from each other. The moon gives the persona dreams about her and the stars remind of him of her eyes. According to Poe, “ the death then of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world, and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover." This is the main theme in “Ligeia” and “Annabel Lee”. Ligeia, Rowena, and Annabel Lee are all beautiful and exquisite women who meet untimely deaths. Ligeia has dark, gorgeous curly hair and intense black eyes. She becomes mysteriously ill and death soon follows. Her husband moves to England and soon remarries. His new bride is the stunning fair, blue-eyed Lady Rowena Trevanion of Tremaine. She also dies.…
