Poem at 39
Poem at 39 and Piano

Poem at 39 is about a woman describing the relationship with her father. She first talks about how she misses him but the poet portrays a subtle sense of dislike and resentment. She says he was tired when she was born ‘How I miss my father I wish he had not been so tired when I was born. This makes her feel like she is not wanted as she has so many other siblings. A child that age would feel very bad if her father did not give it their love and attention and as they get older adults do not feel the need to have a lot of attention anymore.
Also I think as you grow up a child will find themselves doing a lot of thing which their parents did when they were young. ‘Now I cook and look just likes him my brain light’ The poet is referring to her father when she says him. I think it is obvious that her father was not very happy all the time but one of the things he loved doing was cooking and I believe that is why she now cooks like him because it was so memorable for him t be happy that it has stuck in her brain and now makes her feel happy. I think adults will always copy their parents in the things that made them happy as when you are an adult you can’t find all the little things you found funny and made you happy then make you happy now you have grown up so you need to find something else to do so you just follow by example of your parents. This is also shown in Piano (D H Lawrence) he is remembering how he used to watch his mother play the piano smiling whilst he sat under the piano. And looking back on his childhood he wishes he was that small again just to feel that happiness he felt with his mother back then but now he is grown up and she is dead.
The structure of poem at 39 as you read it is very static and I think this gives the impression of I think not very good communication between daughter and father. They never spoke to each other about how they feel or anything a daughter should tell her father. I think this would really make

The relationship between father and son seems to be one of tension and distance as conveyed to the readers at first. For instance, the narrator "looks down" at his father digging, as shown in the second stanza, which can either be interpreted in two ways. One way is that the narrator is situated above his father who is in the fields digging, or another way in which the narrator looks down upon his father and sees no value in his occupation. As shown, the narrator's position is above his father because he has an education, which is reinforced from the start: the narrator is a writer, and most likely received more education than his father who is a potato farmer. The mood reinforces the distant relationship between the father and the son. The mood of the poem at first is solemn and grave. This is exemplified in the onomatopoeia; "a clean, rasping sound" In…

Imagine being abused, hit, yelled at, and left alone without the most important feeling of love. Growing up without a shoulder to cry on or a hand to hold. How would these actions sculpt you as an individual? Would they compel you to do the same actions to your own loved ones, or show them love and compassion, which your life had lacked? Poets tend to write pieces of literature as reflections back on their personal lives, describing situations that stay afloat in their heads. Sharon Olds’ happened to be one of these poets, who expressed her upsetting past relationship with her father and current relationships with her children through these works of art. In Olds’ first poems, she…

The second part of the poem ‘Nightfall’ continues the story of the child forty years from ‘Barn owl’, where she had lost her innocence by shooting an owl and this had resulted in a heavy hearted guilt which was caused by her unknowing and stubborn actions. The poem represents death closing in on the father, and the limitations of time on their relationship that was never experienced before in her younger years. The father, who in the first poem is depicted as an “old no-sayer”, is now held in high esteem, he is admired and respected as an “old king”. The extended metaphor “Since there is no more to taste ripeness is plainly all. Father we pick our last fruits of the temporal.” Appeals to our senses and is now an aural metaphor, it illustrates the father’s life becoming fulfilled or ripe, it has come near to its end and the father and child will now spend or pick the last moments of the father’s life together. Over time her appreciation of her father has changed, this is shown through “Who can be what you were?” and “Old King, your marvellous journey’s done.” She has realised the valuable life her father has led and the great loss that will be felt after he is gone. The child, now a grown woman learns another lesson about death, it can be quiet and peaceful, and “Your night and day…

The poem “Father and Child” by Gwen Harwood shows Harwood’s father teaching her the concepts of life and death, from when she is a young child in “Barn Owl” up to when she is around forty at the time of his death in “Nightfall”, coming to accept the idea that life is not never-ending. In part one called “Barn Owl”; she has learnt to accept death as a component of life. The persona of the poem experiences a loss of innocence with the discovery of the tragedy of death. Before shooting the owl, the child believes they are the “master of life and death,” with the noun, “master,” reflecting the power that the child feels and the ignorance that the child has about the nature of death. This description of the child is later contrasted in the fourth stanza, “I watched, afraid by the fallen gun, a lonely child who believed death clean and final, not this obscene bundle of stuff.” The emotive term, “afraid,” represents the change in the persona’s attitude after being exposed to the harsh reality that is mortality. However, the rhyme and last line “what sorrows in the end, no words, no tears can mend” releases an element of inexpressible sadness that she has towards the death of her father showing that although she accepts death, it still upsets her as it did in “Barn Owl”. Father and Child” Nightfall” is more metaphorical and symbolic suggesting a more mature persona like an adult. The poem represents a human’s journey over time of learning to mature and accept death.…

Throughout the ages, authors have been known to use many of their life experiences in their literary works. They use certain moments that have been imprinted in their heads, because in some way these specific experiences have changed their lives. For instance, Theodore Roethke wrote the poem, “My Papa’s Waltz” in which he writes about a moment from his early childhood that probably affected him so deeply that he was never able to forget about it. This shows that certain moments in our childhood are particularly crucial to the way we turn out to be as adults.…

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

‘Poem at Thirty-nine’ is a free verse structured poem by Alice Walker. There is sadness in the poem and it is presented by showing the feeling that the persona misses her father, instead of using and introducing grieving words and actions in the poem. Walker repeated the first line ‘How I miss my father’ half way down the poem. However, the full stop at the end of the sentence was replaced with an exclamation mark. This shows the persona has been more emotional than before because the memories start to become more powerful in that point in the poem. Walker might have adopted a persona to show the audience how much she was missing her own father.…

The relationship between the father and the daughter is quite tense even though they love each other. We can see proof from the text on page 267 "She thinks of Mr. Brunty, whom she loves, as a "big lug." A "big dumb lug." A "big dumb ox."" There is another example on page 270-271, when her father comes to get her at the detention facility, "Daddy, thank God you´re here, oh, Daddy, I´m so sorry, I´m so scared, I´m so scared...". Here we see how attached she is to him. He, on the other hand, has difficulties to show his emotions. He was very worried that something bad had happened to her, but at the same time looked at her from a distance. "... What strikes him is how tall she´s grown, how solid and ample and heated her flesh. He embraces her, deeply moved, embarrassed, not really knowing what to do. He looks over her head at the juvenile officers as if hoping for support or solace." We can clearly see that both of them love each other, but it feels like they don´t talk so much with each other or that their relation is a bit tense. Her father doesn´t really know how to handle the situation. It´s like they love each other without saying or showing what they feel and then when they are in situations they show their love and then they act strange. Aswell two sentences down "He calls her sweetheart, comforts her, tells her not to cry, she´s coming home now. It´s all over now, he says. Or whatever he says: it´s as if another man, another father, were standing in his place, clumsy and flush-faced in his suit and tie, saying words not his but appropriate to the occasion." I think that Mr.Brunty has a difficult relationship to women since his heart was broken by Hope's mother (see page 263 "His heart had been broken, he…
