Utilization of Waste Plastic in Bituminous Mix for Improved Performance of Roads’ (Plastic Road)
Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem .It is non-biodegradable .It mainly consists of low-density polyethylene .Burning of these waste plastic bags causes environmental pollution. To find its utility in bituminous mixes for road construction.Laboratory performance studies were conducted on bituminous mixes .Laboratory studies proved that waste plastic enhances the property of the mix .Improvement in properties of bituminous mix provides the solution for disposal in an useful way. Plastic Road
Plastic roads mainly use plastic carry-bags, disposable cups and bottles that are collected from garbage dumps as an important ingredient of the construction material.
When mixed with hot bitumen, plastics melt to form an oily coat over the aggregate and the mixture is laid on the road surface like a normal tar road. Objectives of Project
To get the general findings.
To collect the data regarding various aspects of plastic road.
To study various methodologies and comment on it.
To work out methodology for collection and sorting out the useful components of the plastic waste.
To work on the methodology for processing the plastic bags as required for use in the preparation of modified bitumen.
To compare conventional mix and modified mix.
To carry out laboratory investigations, field studies on the performance of pavements using the modified bitumen.
To work out relative economics of using the modified bituminous mixes in road construction works, considering the improved performance and increased service life of the pavement.
According to Larry Flynn, re-cycled polyethylene from grocery bags may be useful in asphaltic (bituminous) pavements, resulting in reduced permanent deformation in the form of rutting and reduced low - temperature cracking of the pavement surfacing.
Salah E. Zoorob and Suparma have shown that...
