Plantarflexion Movement
As we stand up from a sitting position, movement occurs at the hips, knees, and talus joints. Coxal extension brings the trunk into an upright position. Coxal extensors: gluteus maximus, semimenbranosus, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris shorten as they contract to help bring the trunk to an upright position. Knee extension causes the legs to straighten as we move into a standing position. Plantarflexion occurs at your talus joints as we push down against the ground as you stand. Knee extensors: rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis contract and the knee joints straighten up. At the talus, the plantarflexor muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) push down against the floor. This supports the other muscles as

    The hip joint is a ball and socket joint which means it is freely moving and movement can occur in all directions. This hip joint connects the leg to the main torso and is the joint that allows the entire leg to be moved. In this case the femur, tibia and other bones in the leg and foot are being lifted behind the body in preparation for the kick. The agonist muscles, which are the gluteus maximus and hamstring, contract to perform hip extension moving the leg behind the body. While this movement is accomplished the antagonist muscles, which are the illiopsoas and quadriceps relax. Once the leg is at the apex of its backwards swing the gluteus maximus and hamstring relax, and the antagonist muscles for the backwards swing become the agonists. The illiopsoas and quadriceps then contract quickly to bring the leg forward in a swift motion. This movement is the execution phase of kicking a football. Hip flexion continues after the ball has been kicked in the follow through phase. The leg continues its swing and rises in the air after connecting with the ball. Once the leg reaches the apex of its anterior swing hip extends open so that the weight of the step may be placed on it. This phase is important as it is when the muscles and joints slow down and come to a stop. Without this phase the joints and muscles would come to a jarring stop and they could be damaged.
