Pill Bugs Research Paper
All animals try to adapt to the environment to survive. The real question is why do living organisms react to environmental factors? For example, a chameleon will change colors to hide from predators. Bears hibernate in the winter to conserve energy because of the food shortages. Likewise, pill bugs avoid light and try to make homes in dark, damp environments and eat decaying plant and animal matter. The reason pill bugs prefer dark and damp environments is because they behave negatively to phototaxis, which is the response to light, and have a partially positive behavior towards hydrotaxis, which is the response to moisture. The reason I say partial behavior is because they do not prefer to live in an all-dry habitat, but they also do not find large bodies of water an ideal habitat as well. Not just in our experiment, but the overall object of this investigation was to find what type of environment did the bugs respond to. Our experiment was conducted to provide an answer to the question and not to give irrelevant numbers as our data. As we kept on putting different types of environments in the chamber, I realized that the damp soil was most likely going to be the one that the pill bugs responded most positively to, thus proving the fact that pill bugs like dark and damp environments as habitats. The way that my group analyzed the data was by simply placing the different types of environments that occur in nature, obviously in smaller amounts, and watched the pill bugs go to what they thought was an ideal habitat. To answer the question, there was simply no other way to collect data other than to observe how the pill bugs reacted to the different types of environments given. There was no need for calculations, so this was the only way to accomplish the goal of the lab:

    This lab felt very “slow” because there was not a lot of action going on. The pill bugs would either walk around in circles or stay put. However, it was both fun and annoying when my group tried to put the pill bugs in the chamber and take them out.     Before the Industrial Revolution in England in the 1800s, the population of the Peppered Moth (Biston betularia ), was mostly a light color with dark spots which helped them blend in with England’s trees. The trees had dark trunks with light white colored lichen. Only a small percentage of dark colored moths existed in this population.
