In the book Blue like Jazz there is a couple of conversion stories I would like to talk about. The first one comes from Chapter 4. It is the conversion of Millers friend Penny. Penny was a person who did not like Christians and Christianity based on the stereotypes that she had seen and the world has given to them. In the chapter it says that Penny wanted nothing to do with Christianity until she met a friend from her school. She went to college at the same place as miller, which is reed college, and after her freshman year she decided to study at a school in france. While there she was introduced to another student from Reed who she was very fond of and her…

Originally, Fleetwood planned to attend Indiana Weselyan University and become a missionary, but while dealing with some personal problems she decided rather to attend Indiana University South Bend and focus her educational pursuits on secular matters. That said, the community she found herself in, even on IUSB’s public campus was surprisingly Christian. This is certainly not the norm for IUSB students but she found herself sitting in classes run by Christian professors, planning her degree path with a Christian advisor, and pursuing relationships with Christian friends. After re-involving herself in ministry-focused projects she found herself questioning her previous decisions. Due to the fact that she had a rough patch in her faith at the onset of her…

As you enter through the door on the first level of this San Francisco-based Baptist-rooted church, you become overwhelmed by the warm hug and kiss of Sister “What’s-her-name?” as she bold and kindly greets you, “Good morning! God bless you!” Walking up the stairs heading into the Worship Center, Brother and Sister “So and so” affectionately embrace you, just as an aunt or uncle would at a family function. In an instant, you are drawn in by the harmonious singing of the choir over the upbeat sounds of musicians playing the drums, keyboard, guitars, organ and tambourines. As you look around, you may not recognize everybody, but you sense a powerful family-like bondage. Although the love of Christ…

While all of the different skills that was discussed earlier would help me in my dream career, however there is a unique skill that will benefit more than the other is revision. Being a photographer the power of revision may be one of the most important skill. The photographer will need to constantly review their piece of work and try to improve on what that was wrong, if they do not revise on what was wrong then they will not understand the meaning of success. Photographer will need to know why they are doing the same mistakes over and over again so they can avoid it, especially when turning the final product. With the revision the photographer will be able to continue to learn what is needed to be done to get the best result that they want,…

Lastly, the University of San Diego is greatly intertwined with Roman Catholicism, which further attracts me to the school. I am a worshiping Roman Catholic, and believe strongly in my religion and God. It is so outstanding how my dream school is also an active member on the church I believe so strongly in. All Saints Day fell on a particularly scorching day that year. The towering church, brimming with squirming, sweaty, students had nearly exceeded its capacity. I watched from my seat, squished between two other fifth graders, as the other classes from Sts. Peter and Paul school filed in through the kaleidoscopic stained glass doors. The time had then come for the third graders to enter. On this special feast day, third graders were encouraged to dress as their patron saint which included sporting long black robes, veils, and rosaries. As soon as they stepped foot into the building, they were dripping in sweat.…

The story is about a young boy recounting the day of his first communion. The boy is the central character or rather the protagonist of the story. He is also the narrator. The boys’ name is not mentioned in the story, so the working assumption is that the boy is Thomas, the writer himself. What became clear as I read through the story, was this was more than a simple retelling of the events that day but, really a judgement on the catholic faith in its’ tradition of Communion and the duty of confession, and the impact that this duty or obligation can have on a young child. The story is full anecdotal moments that will bring the reader back to their childhood days, and remember how innocent a child’s ‘mind is during their youth. Those moments help underscore the dislike and apprehension that Tomas Rivera might have for some of the customs of the catholic…

See, high school was the start of my faith journey. Often, the preoccupying force of maintaining my mother’s health and covering the problems within my family from the outside world ruled as priority. School became an afterthought, in hindsight, I am the most disappointment in that. Around the nation, many teenagers in worse circumstances sacrifice everything for their education and me I made excuses. I blamed Christ because I thought he dealt me and my family a "bad hand."…

I recently turned eighteen. That means I’m now considered an adult. I have to start making my way out into the “real world”. “Box 11”, I yell, marking the number of boxes on the tally sheet before frantically moving the piled up bags from each of the tables onto the number stickers on the boxing table. I found myself yelling “Box X” a lot this semester because I completed my service hours at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), an organization dedicated to ending world hunger. At FMSC, I packed and boxed food, helping the organization provide food for those in need. I faced some challenges at FMSC, but the rewards of my service far outweighed any challenge I faced. . My service reflected that the Church is catholic, because FMSC, a Christian charity, is universal.…
