Phoenix Jackson Hero
Is Phoenix Jackson a Hero?

Phoenix Jackson is an elderly Negro woman, who is a former slave and is walking by herself through the countryside to get to town in order to pick up medicine for her sick Grandson, who swallowed a poison. Based on the essay question, Phoenix Jackson is considered a hero because of her endurance and her ability to complete a goal. First, Phoenix Jackson is a hero because her journey to get her grandson is not an easy one. She has to walk about 30 miles in order to reach her destination, and she also walks through thorns and bushes. At one point, the hero, Phoenix Jackson, also descends into darkness by falling into a hole after being attacked a dog. “Over she went in the ditch, like a little puff of milkweed. Down there, her senses drifted away” (50). Phoenix falling into a hole during her journey hindered her hike to the town. A hero’s quest is usually not completed without any complications on the way. Although she is not hurting herself during the fall, it was surely an obstacle. Then, the hunter that

Without the medicine for his throat, he could die. “He not get his breath. He not able to help himself. So when the time come around, and I go on another trip for the soothing medicine” (53). Since her grandson could die without this medicine, this trip that Phoenix Jackson is taking is saving his life each time she does it. Also, most heroes save lives, which is one reason why I label her as a hero. Phoenix Jackson is considered a hero for many reasons. She has strong endurance, has had a tough life, and is willing to take a long, crippling journey as long as it saves her grandson’s life. What makes her a hero is that not many people would go as far as Phoenix Jackson does to reach a goal, but she does just that. Therefore, Phoenix Jackson is hero because of her endurance, and her ability to complete a

In Sherman Alexie’s “What You Pawn I Will Redeem”, protagonist Jackson Jackson is not the typical hero but he is a hero nonetheless as a result of the Hero’s Journey, as explicated by Joseph Campbell, that he goes on to reclaim a family heirloom, his grandmother’s regalia. He traverses all over Seattle trying to complete his quest, however it seems like he does not make much progress toward actually completing his quest due to distractions and personal demons; but in the end, it is the journey itself, the journey of self-identity and redeeming his culture that is much more important than the…

Eudora Welty, in her character Phoenix Jackson, creates humanity's counterpart of the phoenix firebird from oriental tradition. Although Phoenix Jackson can not lay claim to the immortality manifested by consuming fiery rebirths (as does the mythological bird), she possesses a fiery spirit and is consumed by love for her grandchild. Ana4rzing the character of Phoenix is pleasurable because the characteristics of her "roundness" are primarily positive, static traits. She is tenacious, confident, wise, and resolute with a clear sense of purpose which guides her fearlessly toward her goal. One word can summarize Phoenix‑‑noble. Even in the one situation when the reader sees Phoenix being sly, her slyness is immediately forgivable. Her slyness is a minor negative characteristic in comparison to her innumerable positive ones and is not a conflicting quality. It is, instead, justifiable in light of the pureness of her motivation‑‑love.…

Throughout Phoenix’s journey, she talks to the animals to stay out of her way and out from under her feet. She seems to have the most connection with the birds that are among her: the bob-whites and the mourning doves. Her command to the bob-whites to “keep out from under [her] feet,” indicates the struggle of her love and also her fear. “Her feet have slipped into the groove of habit, and she trusts them to take her where she wants to go” (Hardin). She trusts her feet more than her senses knowing that they will lead the way, rather than leaving it up to her memory, which tricks her, causing her to relapse on the memory of her grandson and whether or not he is really gone. She hears the mourning doves cry, “and it registers in Phoenix’s mind that it is “not too late” to mourn, as she begins the ascent out of the hollow: (Hardin).…

Also according to my understanding, another theme that the author wanted to illustrate is the sense of love and responsibility Phoenix Jackson had toward her grandson. The sentiment was mainly due to the fact that she is the only person her grandson has to rely on. That was made clear when Phoenix tells the nurse, "We is the only two left in the world" (117), and thus she is determined to make it to town to obtain the medicine that will relive…

Phoenix is facing death in her old age and refuses to give in. Along her journey, she reaches a hill and she says, "Something always take a hold of me on this hill– pleads I should stay," (Journey Into Literature, R.W. Clugston, 2010). I believe it is suggested at this point that she questions her strength to press on, not only against the hill but also against death. Her decision to accept this challenge shows her strength and determination live on.…
