Phat beets goal is to aim to create a healthier, more unbiased food system through providing affordable access to fresh produce. They work to achieve this through the creation of a local food system that allows low-income families to be leaders in the food movement through the creation of school farmlands, clinic-based farmers, and clinic based gardens.
They do support two certified food markets, clinic-based farmers markets, youth-led school farm stand, community nutrition hub, and a youth market garden in partnership with a locally hospital obesity prevention program. Pat beets are a good collective and as a food collective, they strive to support social business, small-scale farmers and farmers of color. They were formed in North Oakland in 2007, as a guerrilla produce stand in North Oakland Park. Phat beets, also has four community produce spaces located all around Oakland: North Oakland Children's Hospital, Arlington Medical center Farmer’s market, Arlington medical center produce stand and the saint Martin De Porres Community Produce stand, another thing is that have three gardens to where they grow their produce: Healthy Hearts Garden 59th street spiral gardens and Beets down acres. …show more content…
Each member has to meet certain requirements to fulfill membership, including one year committed participation in 80% of monthly meetings, and volunteering four hours every month.
