Finding the PH of different concentrations of orange juice. Research Question

By diluting concentrated orange juice with water, can you significantly change the PH value?

Introduction

Across the world, it is thought and widely accepted to believe that Orange juice is the cure to many terrible diseases. However, this may not be true anymore. It has been said that Oranges are very high in vitamin C, therefore one should drink it every morning to stay healthy and prevent the symptoms of any diseases. Oranges apparently are “too acidic to justify the worth of drinking every morning for the miniscule amounts of vitamin C it contains” (Dr. Kenny and Henderson). It has been found that orange juice, while it does contain vitamin C, does not contain enough vitamin C to live up to the “super food” standard that was set for it in the past. Instead of assisting one’s immune system, it has now been discovered that due to the naturally high acidity of orange juice, they actually are detrimental to ones health. Drinking orange juice every day will eventually cause many issues, including stomach ulcers. These painful issues are very real dangers, especially when one has been taught throughout their life to drink orange juice every morning. However, if the pH of the orange juice is decreased, the effects the acidity will have on ones body will be exponentially decreased. The purpose of this experiment is to see if one could simply water down their morning glass of orange juice to protect their health, and continue their habits.

Hypothesis

If the change of pH in orange juice is tested with concentration, then the more water added to dilute the orange juice, the closer the pH will be to seven, because the pH of water is seven, so if the solution were to get infinitely close to pure water, the pH would become seven.

Vitamin C is highly water-soluble and has both acidic and strong reducing properties. It occurs naturally in many animals and plants such as the plants of the fruits used in this lab. Vitamin C exist naturally in the L-ascorbic acid form. It is a strong reducing agent and when oxidative stress is present, it easily converts to the oxidized form which is. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in humans because it functions as a cofactor in several vital enzymatic reactions. Humans do not synthesis vitamin C so need to obtain it from other sources such as juices and fruits. A deficiency of vitamin C would lead to scurvy in human. It has many benefits which include prevention of the common cold/heart diseases and strengthening of the immune system. The recommendation for vitamin C intake for humans is approximately 60 – 95 mg per day and a maximum intake of 2000 mg per day. A long term overdose of vitamin C may cause diarrhea, iron overload disorders and kidney stones. (Food Science and Technology Strand 2015)…

As a result we found out how chemicals and HCL combine, changing the water’s pH levels. When pH levels are too high, the water is labeled as being too acidic meaning it is too hazardous to drink or touch. AST International claims that “Most of us automatically classify lemons, rhubarbs and vinegar as acidic solely because of the way they taste. We don’t realize that strawberries and tomatoes and plenty of other foods are acids too” (Tanasescu). The release of hydrogen ions is how we determine if foods are classified as acids or…

Titration is a technique used to determine the nutritional values of food products due to the compounds in specific food items. You can find out how acidic orange juice is by using a standard titration method. In this method, an electrode is added to a solution of orange juice and deionised water. The titration measures the acidity of the juice. Manufacturers can then use the technique to either reduce the amount of acid or increase the amount to keep customers satisfied or those who have special nutritional needs.…

People may think of fruit as a sweet, healthy option for a snack. What those people do not know is that some of those fruits can be very damaging to their teeth and to their bodies. One reason for this is that a variety of commonly digested fruits are extremely acidic. This experiment will test the pH level of everyday fruits to see how acidic they actually are. When eaten, which fruit will have the lowest pH (be the most acidic)?…

17.033799 mL of HCl was needed to titrate a 25.00 mL sample of H2PO4 to lower the pH from 7.45 to 6.45, while 8.989089 mL of NaOH was needed to titrate a 25.00 mL sample of H2PO4 to raise the pH from 7.45 to 8.45. We determined that there was 0.034966 mL per drop by taking a 150 mL beaker and adding about 90 mL of H2PO4 and weighing by differences. We then let 100 drops drip through and divided the grams by number of drops to get mL per drop. The drop counter was used for the titration of HCl (which took 487 drops) and NaOH (257 drops) and multiplied 0.032977 mL/drop with the number of drops to get the total volume used for each solution.…

Assumptions: Heating the test tubes for different periods of time provide environments where different amounts of heat are exerted onto the orange juice and the concentration of Vitamin C may be affected. It is suggested that the test tubes should hold amounts of fruit juice that are more than the amount of fruit juice needed to decolourize 3mL of DCPIP initially, as this allows investigation for whether more or less juice is needed, thus whether the concentration is decreased or…
