Ph Levels Lab Report
Lab on pH Levels
Purpose:
Throughout this experiment we are trying to learn how to take proper pH measurements using a pH meter. We also want to see the pH of different common liquids and record the change in pH when we add acids and alkaline liquids. The last reason we are conducting this experiment is to explain and show how fresh milk spoils by the change in pH.

Materials: In this experiment we used graduated cylinders and glass beakers and added variety of ingredients including 50 mL of; soda (preferably coke), milk, diluted lemon juice (10mL lemon juice, 40mL distilled water), tap water, and an antacid tablet. These ingredients have a different range of acidity levels, which we measured with a digital pH meter. We also used a beaker

Then you want to take a graduated cylinder and measure out 50mL of tap water and then transfer it to a sterile 100mL beaker. You then repeat that step with soda and milk but make sure you are using a new clean beaker with each new ingredient. Now you will have to make the diluted lemon juice, to do this you want to add 10mL of lemon juice and 40mL of distilled water in a 100mL glass beaker. Using the pH meter test the pH of each of the liquids in the glass beakers. To use the pH meter efficiently you should turn it on and put it in the liquid while stirring it until there is a steady number. This is the number you will see on the screen showing the pH of the initial liquid. Record the data you found in the chart on page 3 of the packet. Next crush one antacid tablet with hammer and mix it into 50mL of distilled water. It is very important that you do not mix the tablet with tap water. Then take the pH meter and test the pH level of the new mixture and record it in your Antiacid-Soda Solution data sheet. Using the graduated cylinder measure out 10mL of the antacid mixture you just made and add it to the 50 mL beaker of soda. Mix the two …show more content…
The soda-antacid relationship and the milk-dilute lemon juice solution relationship are complete opposites. The slop of the soda-antacid relationship is an upward increasing while the milk-dilute lemon juice relationship is a downward decreasing slope.
4. As more dilute lemon juice is added to the milk the milk becomes something called curled and the color dramatically changes. Also one of the things that changed was the pH, it went from 7.06 which is closer to neutral base and then decreased to 5.09 after 30mL of dilute lemon juice is added.

5. The normal pH of blood in the human body is 7.4, for urine the pH level is 6.0. The normal pH for human saliva is 6.0-7.4 and the pH level for beer is 3.7-4.1.

6. Any pH less than 5.4 in a lake ecosystem would cause the fish not to be able to reproduce.

7. A buffer works by reacting with any added acid or base to control the pH.

8. Two examples of natural buffers include carbonate and bicarbonate, which play a huge role in regulating the body’s blood pH.

9. If one would have an upset stomach cause form excess acid, then chewing an antacid tablet will help reduce the discomfort because an antacid tablet is an artificial buffer that is made to help balance out the human bodies pH level when too much acidic things are

The objective of the Irresistible lab is to determine the capacity of each solution (unbuffered and buffered both) and how much they resist changes to pH. This is accomplished by having ten graduated beakers: two containing pure water, two with .1 M Sodium Chloride, two with 1 gram of solid sodium acetate dissolved in acetic acid, two with 5 grams of solid sodium acetate dissolved in acetic acid, and two with 10 grams of solid sodium acetate dissolved in acetic acid. These are split into two groups of five containing one of each solution. The pH of each solution is then measured and a pipette is used to distribute 1 mL of HCl, a strong acid, at a time to each solution in the first set, with the pH being measured and recorded until a drastic change is recorded. The procedure will be repeated with the other set of solutions using NaOH, a strong base.…

pH < 7 Basic solutions = pH > 7 • Most biological fluids have pH 6 – 8 – pH values in human stomach can reach 2 • Each pH unit represents a 10-fold difference in H+ & OH- concentrations. Acids and bases • Acids – release H+ ions in water • Bases -- release OH- ions in water • pH is a measure of hydrogen ion (H+) concentration – Lower pH – acidic – Higher pH basic – pH is logarithmic – a difference of 1 (from pH 4 to 5) is actually a ten-fold increase in H+ conc. • From 3 to 7?…

We used a scooping utensil to collect the salt and used a weigh boat to hold and measure the mass. (The weight of the weigh boat was zeroed out prior to measuring the salt). Once we added the salt to the ammonia and completely mixed the solution, we pipetted 20 mL into a volumetric flask. Then we set up a titration system using 0.100M NaOH in the buret.…

The substances that I found to be acids are vinegar, mouthwash, gastric juice, black coffee, and lemon juice. These substances were found to be acids because after testing them by dipping pH paper into a well fill with about three drops of the substance, the color of the paper turned to a color correlating with the color of a six or lower on the pH scale.…

Lab was to analyze the properties that buffer posses when resisting changes in pH. This was done by “testing the ability of buffered and unbuffered solutions to resist changes in pH with the addition of strong acids and bases (Lab Manual 2012-2013).” To discover the buffer ability of a solution, 10 solutions were made with varying amounts of distilled water, NaCl, C2H3NaO2, and HC2H3O2. The beakers labeled with the numbers 1-5 were determining the buffer’s ability to neutralize the strong acid HCl. The beakers labeled 6-10 were utilized in determining the buffer’s ability to neutralize the strong…

For the firsts three sets of titration trials of baking soda powder was used. About 0.3 grams of baking soda powder were measured and mixed with 20mL of deionized water in a beaker. Three drops of the indicator bromothymol blue were put in the baking soda solution and mixed well. A burette and funnel were rinsed off using water and cleaned well. The burette and funnel were rinsed a second time using 5mL of the HCl solution that was prepared the previous week and disposed of in a clean beaker. The rest of the HCl solution was then put in the burette. The beaker containing the baking soda solution was placed under the burette. 1mL of the HCl solution was released at a time into the beaker with the baking soda until a change was observed. The results were recorded. The process was repeated three more times and the results were recorded. For the second sets of titration trails, fresh squeezed lemon juice was used. 5mL of lemon juice were used and three drops of the indicator phenolphthalein were put in the juice. The burette was then rinsed off with water and rinsed off a second time using NaOH and disposed of in a clean beaker. The rest of the NaOH solution was put in the burette and the beaker containing the lemon juice was placed under the burette. 1mL of the NaOH solution were released at a time into the beaker containing the lemon juice until changes were observed.
