Pet Peeve Research Paper
Pet Peeve Essay Joel Carlos English

If i had to say that i have a pet peeve, or something that i

feel gets really on my nurves it would have to be people that use

Cell phones with total disreguard for the people around them that are

forced to listen to their one sided conversations against their will. Dont

get me wrong, i think the advances in cell phone technology are great,

the ability to wirelessly talk to anyone in the world on demand without

the use of wires is a very incredable achievement, but it does have its

minor negative aspacts that just seem to bug me and get on

It wasent until the invention of the telegraph that the real

potential for person to person communication was realized. After years and

years of study and improvement, people seem to have perfected the modern

phone but it seems that we as a culture havent perfected the etiquette that

should be used in conjuction with these advances.

To me, i feel that many cellphone users are unaware of just how discourteous

they are being. Wether it be at a book store, library , public bus, train, theatres, wedding,

or funeral, there are just some places where their are other people who dont care what

your conversation is all about, but people still continue to think that what they need to be

talking on the phone about is more important then anything that is going on around them.

Its not only strangers that i see using cellphones at inapproprate times, its friends

and family as well. It always seems that when i have to deal with someone i know that

we are continuously being interrupted by an obnoxous ringtone or an incomming text

messege that takes nine times longer to reply to then it took to read the original

    Disconnected Urbanism

In the article Disconnected Urbanism, Paul Goldberger talks about how cell phones are intruding into every moment in every possible place. You can’t go to an urban place today without seeing someone on their cell phone. Cell phones are the reason why public places are not so much public anymore. Goldberger says that when you are in a specific place you should experience that place with your full attention, but that is almost impossible in today’s generation because cell phones are everywhere. Goldberger uses “When you are in a forest, you want to experience its woodsiness” as an example of this. It is becoming harder to enjoy these special places because if you are somewhere and part of your attention is drawn into your cell phone then you aren’t able to take in the full experience. Someone is not able to experience the full urban life if some if your attention is drawn into your cell phone. Goldberger makes a great point when he says “You are either on the phone or carrying one, and the moment it rings you will be transported out of real space into a virtual realm.” It’s almost like you are in one place, but then again you aren’t. I think because people are so dependent on their cell phones public places are becoming less public, but also people themselves are becoming less social and more socially awkward. Goldberger makes many great points in this article, and I agree with all of them. It’s sad how this generation is so dependent on cell phones. Complaints about cell phone use in public places are almost as common as cell phones themselves. Technology has increased drastically over time, and it’s only going to get worse.…

With the fast development of the society, we have stepped into an era of information and technology. Cell phone, regarded as a main communication tool, is enjoying great popularity in the world. Some people even can't live without it. While Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics at American University in Washington, D.C. said, "What people like most about their mobile devices is that they can reach other people. What they like least is that other people can reach them." He explain the paradox of cell phones and I can't agree with him more.…

If you’re a fitness freak like me or spend countless hours in the gym rather than your own home you know what goes on wants you step a foot in the gym. But at one point or another we’ve all seen nasty, irritating, and confusing behavior by others at a gym or reaction center. Like for instance it are giant puddles of sweat left on machines, a meathead hoarding dumbbells in a packed weight room, or that one old man or women nude in the locker room. Nevertheless, for some people common respect seems to disappear in a gym setting now days. However, the common pet peeves I have always experience is preventable if people follow my advice, then everyone’s workout will go peacefully and smoothly.…

My big pet peeve is when the website says to the effect, please follow these directions to re-enable cookies in your browser and then gives instructions to globally allow both first and third party cookies. Seriously, why don't they get that people who have disabled cookies globally probably don't want to enable them? Not that all third-party cookies are evil, of course, but the idea of anyone knowing what websites I've visited is more than a little creepy to me. Probably the worst of them; like the current locations on every part of phones even giving exact address of were a photo was taken. So, in order to preserve my privacy with minimal fuss along with keeping my computer from becoming slower than a slug, I have discovered three ways of browsing without doing this. Number one Figure out which domains I have to allow. It's usually fairly easy, though occasionally it's not. Whether or not, it's one of those things that seem…

    Pet Peeves

Some of my pet peeves are smoking, people going into my room, people saying the phrase “yah know” (when I don’t), when people try to act all cool, when people take my sarcasm seriously, another is when I pick up a rock and skip it I all- of-a- sudden get a feeling to grap another and maybe the next one that stands out. The smoking part comes from the fact that the bathrooms in this school always smell like crap because of all the stuff that people do in them. It’s almost enough to make you choke, recently I was walking into the bathroom and a guy gets out of the stall, and walks up to me and blows smoke straight into my face. They smoke all sorts of crap in there, from cigarettes, probably marijuana, and crack. The next one is about my dislike of people going into my room, I prefer my privacy, I like to keep to myself and I don’t like it when people mess with my stuff. I prefer to do things my way and that’s how it is. I don’t appreciate it when someone comes into my room and puts something up, because then I don’t know where it is and I get mad. Everyone has a certain way they do something, and I don’t appreciate it when people try and mess up mine. The next is when people say “yah know” like five times in maybe two sentences. My step-mom does this all the time and I’ve given up trying to correct her because she tells me to shut up and mind my own business; I don’t really know why this is a peeve for me but it is. Next is my peeve about people trying to act all “cool.” They go walking down the hallway with their pants sagging just like their IQ has and add a little foot movement and bam! They are all-of- a- sudden think they’re so cool. It just really ticks me off because obviously they aren’t, I mean the least they could do might be to not show their boxers, and I don’t really think anyone wants to see them. Next is about my sarcasm, I love being sarcastic, it’s one of the things that I do best. What I don’t like about it is that there are…

A Call to Action: Regulate Use of Cell Phones on the Road When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, we are irritated, but at least our lives are not endangered. When we are on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than irritating: They are putting our lives at risk. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by dialing and chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly running down pedestrians in crosswalks. A number of bills to regulate use of cell phones on the road have been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has come to push for their passage.…

    Biggest Pet Peeves

    • 297 Words
    • 2 Pages

My biggest pet peeves are someone chewing with their mouth open, and people who don't use their manners. It makes my skin crawl to here the saliva and food get chewed up. Watching someone who chews food with their mouth open is the most unattractive thing to me. It actually makes my stomach weak thinking of someone doing this. I notice it every time and instantaneously my attitude changes. Nobody enjoys watching or hearing food as someone chews it up. I am disgusted and I just want to leave where ever I am. The sound and sight of it makes me sick. One of my next big pet peeves is someone who does not use their manners. I feel no matter what type of parent you had good or bad. Your parent does expect you to say please, thank you, yes ma'am, no ma'am, no sir, and yes sir. I believe these are just the basics of having good manners. Straying off from the words people can say, the actions people can do as far as hold a door for the person behind you, pulling out someone’s chair at dinner, or even helping a little old lady in a store to find something.…

what says that anything is anything or nothing at all? Im so dull at times. I wanna find meaning in things and I want to be this great, philosophic all around girl. Im not. Majority of what I write or think is complete bullshit. Every so often it comes across as genuine and well thought out but really its just stupidity. Tbh I think that even to be diagnosed with something would be bullshit because im perfectly normal. If I asked you all to use some words to describe yourselves what words would you use? Student, Future entrepreneur, black, gay...all these titles but do they really say who you are? More likely than not they wont. And if I asked you to describe your closest friend could you really? In all seriousness no. Why is this? People, all people, are just a paradoxal ball of psychological issues and perfection. We try to define ourselves and each other. We want to belong. Not to be cliché but our goal in life is to make a connection with something. We begin to steretype. Whether its based on fact or not doesnt matter. And at what cost? While its true that we are at times rightly steretyped, our views of ourselves can be distorted. As a person, still trying to figure out what I want out of life, its not hard to see that the stigmas, increasing suicide rates, and the difficulty in being successful in education because of stereotyping hinders peoples lifes as well their concepts of themselves and others.…
