“Class answers” – Ebola
Intro: Today I am going to be informing you guys a little bit more about Ebola. I will explain what is it, the symptoms of people who have contracted it, where it came from, where it is now, and what you can do to keep yourself safe from contracting it.
What: Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys and chimpanzees) caused by the Ebola virus; characterized by high fever and severe internal bleeding. It can be spread from person to person and is largely limited to Africa. Ebola has taken well over 4,000 lives and now officials are saying that a better fatality rate estimate would be about 10,000. Ebola kills, on average, 50%-90% of its victims. It was first generated in the Congo region of Africa in 1976. It is said that this disease came from fruit bats who then passed it on to other animals such as monkeys and other tropical animals that were killed and eaten by the people in Africa. Worrying about this disease is the worst thing you can do. There are 1,000’s of scientists and doctors testing different anti-bodies and vaccines and so far almost all of the cures they have tested have worked, there just isn’t a sufficient amount of studies that have been done on these cures to start using them on people yet. However, If you do happen to contract the virus and beat it, your body will have developed an anti-body that will make you immune to Ebola for up to 10 years.
