Persuasive Essay

“Open your books kids”. It’s September and your teacher is getting you ready for your class and she is going to teach you a very important science lesson. Over the summer all you’re thinking about is the beach and getting a tan while all of that information just leaves your head. If there was year round school forget that information they learned at school, they would enjoy the breaks more because you can go to different places at different times of the year, and many students would receive a better education.

All that information that you learned in school would stay in your head and you would remember it longer if there was year round school. As I said before, on vacation you don’t worry about school, only all of the fun you’re going to have. Year round school would help students retain more, and receive more information, which would help the students in the future. That information might actually help them succeed in their jobs and such because every little bit of information can count! Many students forget stuff easily, like one time my sister asked me a question I didn’t know and she told me the answer. Five minutes later she asked me the same question and I FORGOT IT! What makes you think that students wouldn’t forget a lot of information over summer? But the shorter breaks during year round school would be there to save the day and leave less time for the students forget the information they learned.

Another reason why year round school is an excellent idea is because kids can go on different vacations at different times of the year. Say you live in Chicago. On a winter day it is negative twenty degrees farenheit and you want to take a vacation to somewhere warm but you have school the next day. If there was year round school you could go on a vacation to Florida a week from now because you have a week vacation in January. That is all because the school board spaced out the days instead of the days in the summer. Plus, in the summer after you do like five things and take a vacation the rest of those five odd weeks can be pretty boring. Year round school would make it so you had five weeks of summer vacation and the other five or six weeks would be spread out through the rest of the year. Now you have more activities to do in different weather, which has many advantages for many people in its self.

Last but not least, year round school would be amazing is because students would receive a better education. Teachers would be able to space out work they have planned for students more orderly and not try to cram it a test just because a break is coming. If there was year round school, teachers could get to some lessons later on in the year if they take more time. Therefore the students would feel more relaxed and confident about what they are learning or are going to be learning. Many people think getting a better or just an education is important. So, if there was year round school it would benefit you in many ways, because you would be learning more information over the course of the school year. Even though there are the same number of days for year round school and having summer vacation teachers would still be more relaxed of what they are going to be teaching so then students would receive a better education.

So the next time you hear “ Year round school”, don’t say “ NOO!” Just think of all the benefits like not forgetting the information you learned that year, enjoying the breaks more because you can go to different places at different times of the year, AND, receiving a better education. So instead of thinking about beaches and tans, start thinking about your education and how your life would change for the better because of year round school.

Schools should be year-round because of many factors like the fact that year-round schooling can generate strong feelings. A 1994 report, “Prisoners of Time,” argued that “a departure from the traditional school calendar could better meet the needs of contemporary society and result in increased student achievement.” Research has also shown that year-round schooling does have an effective on students. Reviews of existing literature on this subject generally contend that the achievement of children in year-round schools is as good as, or slightly better than, that of their peers in traditional schools (Palmer & Bemis, 1999; Kneese, 1996). Another example would be a study on six elementary schools where year-round schools posted overall-test-score increases that was higher than those of traditional schools (Kneese, 2000). Schools should also be year-round because the common belief is that after a long three-month summer break, students are forgetting what they learned the previous year and teachers are wasting valuable time trying to review everything from the previous year. A review of 39 studies that has been conducted showed that students test scores drop over summer vacation and that mathematics…

Over all public schools, there are only 4% that operate on a year round calendar. In that 4% there are 2 million students learning under a year round basis. Besides, year round schedules mitigate education loss from the previous school year. It also tarnishes the tradition of summer break, according to “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation?” by Laura Kelsey. Evidently the year round calendar is a prime solution to alter failing grades and help struggling students catch up. For instance, some students are overwhelmed with work and drama that occurs in school. With that in mind, year round schedules have more spread out recesses eradicating the overwhelming school environment. Simultaneously, year round calendars lessen memory loss between long breaks. Thus helping students retain and understand their curriculum. Lastly, studies show that American students are less proficient in academic topics.…

I don’t think all students would be affected with year-round school but the majority of the students would. Most teens now a day need to work during the summertime full-time to earn money for college or to support themselves. For younger kids they would miss out on the opportunity to go to summer camps and get an educational setting in a fun environment where they can interact with peers outside of their norm. Also a lot of kids who currently attend a year-round school are known to have a social disorder with others. This may cause stress and anxiety to the student, which can lead to poor grades within school. Unfortunately students and cost wouldn’t just be affected by this transition, so would the teachers.…

According to Districts Weigh Pros and Cons of Year-Round Schools by Luke Towler, “One of the main reasons for switching to year-round schools is to improve retention rates, there is no concrete proof that students improve academically” (Towler 2). This means that most change to year round schooling to have more time to learn and remember, but there is no proof that year round schooling helps students academically. Also, according to Districts Weigh Pros and Cons of Year Round Schools by Luke Towler, “Students really do forget or unlearn things they have learned when too much time off is given between classroom sessions” (Towler 3). This is trying to explain that students in year round schooling forget more during the frequent vacations. Lastly, according to Districts Weigh Pros and Cons of Year Round Schools by Luke Towler, “A study released in 2007 by The Ohio State University, however, found that there are really no differences in learning between students who attend school year round, and those who are on a traditional schedule” (Towler 3). Likewise, kids who have your round schooling do not get a better education but the same type as those who go to traditional…

One of the main reasons year-round schooling is a bad idea is that students will have less time to spend with his or her family. For most people, summer is the time of year they go on family vacation. Sometimes these vacations are with just immediate family, but other times they are spent with family from faraway places. If school continues throughout the whole summer, these families will be split apart for long periods of time. Vacations meant to spend time with distant family won’t be an option during the two week break year-round schooling allows. Most schools are not on the year-round schedule so it will be an inconvenience to visit them. For example, I have family living in various states and none of their school systems are on the year-round schedule. The only time I see these family members is during the summer. If the school system cuts our summer break, I will not see them at all. Another reason we should not have year-round schooling is because parents will not get…
