Personal Statement: I Am Solangel Garcia
I am Solangel Garcia. I met you in the Pitt Diversity Career Fair on November 3rd. You told me that given my bilingual background you would me to to send you my resume, so please find it attached to this e-mail. Sorry it took me some time to put it together, but in there you will find a longer version of my work experience. My resume is just a condensed version of what has taken me to get through college. I know I don't have as much "official" leadership experience from being an active member of school or church groups. However, I have been able to juggle work and school at the same time while still being able to get above average grades. At last, I am a native Spanish speaker and went to school in the Dominican Republic until my junior year

Growing up I excelled in every educational aspect of school. However the stereotype for someone of my skin color did not allow for me to be both Mexican and smart. My Hispanic peers began to exclude me; the most common way they did that was by taking away my identity as a Mexican. I heard “Diego you white” an uncountable number of times throughout my schooling. I noticed that my grades and vocabulary would trigger that comment so I began to change the way I acted in order to fit in. It was not until recently that I realized the fault in changing and found a peaceful merge between the two speech communities.…

. I am Farhana Rahman. I would be a good disease detective camp counselor because I am motivated, hardworking and no matter what type of work it is, I try to accomplish it with honesty, love and respect. I got the motivation from the CDC Disease Detective Camp Counselors of 2016. All of them seemed to be so happy being with us. They were so friendly and so caring. I got the inspiration from them to be a counselor. I just do not want to be a counselor because they are going to give the stipend money but it’s because honestly when I was a camper, I really loved that week that I spent at CDC. I love being there and I have learned many things. Through this counselor position I can lead the new campers to learn and enjoy. It was an incredible opportunity…

When my grand-uncle died, hundreds of people came to his funeral. Many were former patients; they spoke of how gracious my grand-uncle was. He changed the lives of many people by caring for those who could not afford healthcare. Before I die, I want to better the lives of as many people possible by developing cheap and accessible treatments. HLI’s Student Week provides the chance to utilize theoretical knowledge from scientific articles, AP sciences, and independent studies in practical application. Since the field I am passionate about pursuing is pathology, HLI’s focus on life sciences at a molecular level would be the most beneficial program for me as I would be learning how medical professionals research in a laboratory. From the skills…

The University of San Diego stands out the most among all other colleges I am applying to because there I will be challenged academically. Every college or university encompasses the ability to challenge a student academically, but San Diego furthers their ability by promoting its Catholic values in its everyday education. So when graduating from USD I will not just have a degree in some sort of business major, but I will have acquired the knowledge to further my education, my career, and my life. This University provides a superior liberal arts learning experience, which allows me to keep my options wide open and to not fully commit to a major upon acceptance. I know that I want to major in business, but I am still undecided as to which exact…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…
