When I first started training to be a nurse, my most compelling reason for peruse in the career was to care for the sick. Now that I am approaching the end of my three years of training my rationale has changed, I now want to empower patients in regards to their own health, supporting families in need, care for the ‘sick’ child and make a difference amongst as many people as I can.…

The teacher that has had the most impact on me is Mrs. Carrie, better known as Mrs. “Cool Cat” Carrie. Mrs. Carrie was my second grade teacher. I don’t think I knew at the time how great she was at her job, but looking back it isn’t hard to see. Mrs. Carrie was creative in her lessons and clearly loved her job.…
A long time ago, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, we were in the car when my dad saw a piano on the side of the road with a “free” sign on it. Dad thought my sister and I should have one, so he brought a bunch of his friends together and they brought it home. I became excited. The piano sounded way out of tune and the white paint was chipped, but it remained a beautiful instrument in my eyes. We cleaned it up and then moved it to the very end of the living room, where it remained for many years.…
I have played piano and violin since I can remember. It could be that I have a bad memory, that I didn't do anything until I was in second grade, or that making music was not something I wanted to do and couldn't.…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…
Academically, I have always been very determined to achieve the best that I can possibly can and In my younger years, at primary school, my difficulties with maths meant I began to develop a sense of perseverance and determination that helped me to completely overcome the cloud of confusion surrounding the topic and I am proud to say, I still carry this with me and apply it to everything I do.…
I am ready to start a new chapter in my life and to take the next step to becoming a Registered Nurse. I have worked for the NHS for over 3 years now, and have been a Health Care Assistant for 16 months. Prior to this I worked as an Ambulance Care Assistant for East Midlands Ambulance Service. I have had experience in patient care from washing, bathing, monitoring vital signs, and working both in the community and in a hospital setting. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team has helped me effectively care for my patients and developed my communication skills in working with other NHS professionals. One of the most satisfying parts of my job now, and in my previous role is the direct patient contact. Developing trusting relationships and listening to them is very rewarding and helps me to get to know my patients, show empathy and maintain their dignity. I am used to shift working, working 7 days a week with various shift patterns, so this side of the role will not faze me.…
She taught me a lot, and really helped me grow and inspired me to want to walk in her footsteps. I don't believe any child would want to sit still for a whole hour playing the piano, I sure did not. I have had piano teachers in the past whom were unpleasant and rude, which made me dread going to class every week. My parents realized I was unhappy with my previous piano teacher and switched to Joy in hopes of making my experiences more enjoyable. Joy was a elementary teacher, so she was extremely empathetic towards kids like me. She found ways to let me actually enjoy the beauty of music, I got to pick the songs I liked to listen to and played according to my likes and dislikes. She was creative in the different activities we did each listen, and made me enjoy and appreciate piano. Her positive attitude made me feel less stressed out and more relaxed, this allowed me to be more confident and let my personality shine. I really appreciated my piano…
Education is of great value to me and I take it very seriously. To be given the opportunity to study further is of great importance to me and I intend to go as far as I possibly can with it. Attending UCONN School of Social Work seems like the best choice for me. I was impressed by the breadth of concentrations offered, and I absolutely love the idea of being able to complete my degree where I attended as an Undergraduate student. By attending UCONN, I hope to broaden and deepen my knowledge in Social Work. Here I will be able to achieve one of my major educational goals which is obtaining my Graduate degree.…
“Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do!”, I exclaimed to my piano teacher at the age of seven. Since then, I knew that piano would become a significant part of my life. Outside of my activities in health sciences, piano takes a major part of my time. When I came to the United States at the age of eight from Egypt, I was not ready to give up such a huge part of me. I began joining music camps and courses such as S.O.A.R, where I met my future piano teacher, Mrs. Jane. She inspired me to continue playing the piano under the Suzuki methodology and instilled in me a love for music. This caused me to beg my mom for lessons from Mrs. Jane. My younger brother and sister saw my love for music, and decided to play the piano as well.…
