It started off like everyday for every beagle working in the airport. A beagle’s life working in the airport is mainly using our acute sense of smell to sniff out any meats or plants that could possibly carry diseases or pests. I work in the Beagle Brigade at the Tay Airport. The Beagle Brigade is a team of beagles, and human handlers that search for prohibited agricultural products, and unauthorized meats. From what I’ve heard my owner says that without us our foods wouldn’t be safe, and there can be diseases that can be introduced in the U.S.To make it simple, without us humans wouldn’t be safe at all.…

Ron Hansen’s short story, My Kid’s Dog, is meant to be a funny story about revenge, irony, and hatred. This typical story is about a man who hate his children’s dog. Throughout the story the father tells us about the dog from his experience and his relationship with it. The father also comes across as though he does not realize why his wife and kids are so fond of the dog and does not take kindly to the fact that the dog acts perfect around them. In the story the dad uses sarcasm and irony to explain to the audience the things the dog has done that makes him feel how he does towards him. In the beginning of the story the narrator made it very clear by stating, “My kid’s dog died. Sparky. I hated that dog. The…

No more click of his paws against the hardwood floor. Or the sound of his bellowing bark and pounding of his paws whenever someone rang the doorbell. Now whenever someone knocks on the door I wait, I wait for him to pounce toward the door and then I realize no, there won't be anymore of that, because he's gone. I can still remember the day it ended.…

Max was my best friend. He was a very lively golden retriever with a golden brown body and a white chest. My father got the dog before I was born, and just when he meets my mom. I remember feeding him table scraps and my mom getting mad because he shouldn’t have table scraps. When I was 3 years old he would snuggle with me before I went to bed, but after I got a bunk bed then he would just sleep on the floor of my room. My sister didn’t really get to see him much because he was still a baby when he had to be put down.…

It all began when a was a little boy and all I wanted was a dog, for years I begged and begged, and still no dog. I felt as if I was incomplete without one, I had even written persuasive essays in school on why I should get a dog and waited and just hoped for it. Finally, when I was in 5th grade, I found a church ministry where we met once month and came up with ideas to raise money for the local rescue. During the meetings, we would also go for a walk, those who had animals would walk them. One time, somebody from the rescue came with one of the rescue dogs for the walk, which inspired me to go to the rescue and check it out.…

It is hard for me to admit that I'm afraid. Being a black woman in today’s society, I constantly feel the pressure to prove something. The pressure to destigmatize, and rise above—to be better than the ill-gotten images depicted of my race and sex. The pressure to carry the entirety of my race and sex wherever I go, yet still be an individual. Facing all the pressure to become the model “strong independent black woman,” I am hesitant to admit I am afraid because fear is seen as weakness. Picture a horse or deer with their stick-like legs shaking in fright in cartoons—the stark opposite of historically mightier figures like lions or jaguars which portray power and confidence. However, what one may forget is the legs of that horse help pull the weight of 400 pounds, and the body of a dear can annihilate a two-ton vehicle. So fear—or what looks like fear—isn’t always a bad thing.…

A person I have always respected and liked as a coach, teacher, and someone who I could comfortably talk to is Mr. Derrick Rizzo. I first met Mr. Rizzo when I was in sixth grade and decided to start wrestling. Throughout my middle school career, my relationship with him had just kept growing. What made me begin to like Rizzo was when I first started wrestling, and didn’t know much, he always openly helped me and my partner.…

I received a call from my son’s uncle, Harold asking if I would give him a ride to a friend’s house to examine some pit bull puppies she had for sale. At first I had planned other activities for the day, but my daughter who overheard the conversation begged me to go. I made the plans to pick him up and as we were getting ready to leave, I reminded my daughter that we were not going for us. I had owned dogs in years past, and after the last one was stolen out of my yard, decided it was too painful to own a dog. Also, I had heard all the horror stories of people having pit bulls around their kids. When we arrived at my friend, Courtney’s house, I heard the deep barking from inside. My friend motioned for us to wait at the front door as she put…

I was almost labeled a hamster killer. The first pets i got were dwarf hamsters. I went to petsmart with my mom and picked out two hamsters that were supposedly both girls, but one ended up being a boy. One's name was Caesar and the other Felipe. They weren’t always the nicest, but that didn’t make me love them any less. There was this one time that both of my dwarf hamster's got out while i was at school. My mom told me when i got home that she closed the door to my bedroom because they had escaped. I searched everywhere in my room for them. One hamster was under my bed and the other under my sister's bed since we shared a room at the time. Hamsters always find a way to get into the hardest places to find them in. I caught the one under my sisters bed and he was fine. When i went to get the other one out something funny, but sad happened. I have bins with wheels on them that i would roll under my bed and store stuff in. I had to roll the one under my bed out to see where the hamster was because i couldn't find her. So, as im doing this my mom came in the room to see if i had caught them. I was rolling the bin out as i saw something flat squashed on the floor…

I was never a dog lover. My kids always wanted a dog. I dug my heels in but eventually, they wore me down with chorus’ of “please can we get a dog?” Begrudgingly, I began looking for a dog. It was to be a Christmas present for my kids, an older dog, a trained dog. I knew that I did not have the patience for training and I knew that when kids say they will help; I knew exactly what that meant.…

It was a ferociously gloomy day in the heart of Center City. The time of the observation was from 11:43 am to 12:43pm. Sandwiched between 15th street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard is the Philadelphia's Municipal Services Building and within the plaza of the building lies Board Game Park. Even in the rain, the park was festive. Upon arriving, it began to drizzle. The drizzle was light enough for me to sit by a statue that was composed of multiple bodies piled on top of one another. The noises heard ranged from rain dropping, to horns honking to people laughing or shouting. In the surrounding area of the Board Game Park is Love Park with its remarkable LOVE sculpture and fountain, which was spewing pink water in support of Breast Cancer Awareness…
