Personal Narrative: When I Grow Up
When I was younger, I was oblivious to the world around me,
I always thought life was just a really slow journey,
But as I began to grow up I started to recognise,
That everything I thought when I was younger were just stupid little lies.

I have learnt to take every chance I get,
So in the future I won’t regret.
I don’t know if I have matured in my mind,
But sometimes that boy they want me to be is hard to find.

What does growing up really mean,
Is it about how big you are or when you turn 18,
Is it about how much you own,
Or what you have

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

During the past four years of attending Newark High School, working on MLA format was something teachers worked very hard on to teach students. Every essay written by each student had to be correctly written in MLA format or else you would fail a writing assignment. This has been taught since the start of Freshmen year of school. There was no way around this rule. From just graduating High School, I am very experienced with writing essays. In many different classes we had to write essays. We did not just write essays in English. Students had to write essays in Math, Biology, Psychology, French, History, Government, and many more classes.…

Growing up, most of the children I knew would go to church on Sunday’s, visit their grandparents’ house to bake cookies after school, and have milk and cereal for breakfast every morning. But I had never set foot inside of a religious building, couldn’t even speak the same language as my grandmothers, and ate congee with fermented soy beans like it was the most natural thing in the world. My little town where I’d grown up, made friends, and built memories was, to say the least, completely un-diverse.…

“Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see,” Dad reiterated as I became a young woman. But growing up, I relied on what I could see, what I could touch, and what others shared with me. I held my peers and teachers words as peremptory and gained a sense of false dependence. As I entered my third year of high school this changed.…
