Personal Narrative: Veterans Day
“I prefer to earn it. It makes me appreciate it more.” I knew from the time I woke up that today it would be a busy Sunday, and I was right. I had just finished a soccer game, and now we had to rush home to get dressed for a fancy event for the Leo’s club. This week happened to have Veterans day and the club leader, named Ann, had planned a generous lunch for the veteran served by the Leo’s club members. I had recalled my mom mentioning this to me about a week ago, but the memory was hazy when it came to me answering her question. She had asked if I wanted to go, but I had already knew the weekend would be packed with scheduled events. We even had to skip some because of how many were planned. I knew it was a nice thing to do, and I didn’t …show more content…
I was terrible with talking to almost anyone except for friends and family. The thought of making small talk with strangers frightened me more than accidentally stepping on a sharp tack. Heidi, Sean’s mom, responded with a simple “okay” to then lead us to an open table. She offered us to a packed table, which seemed unreasonable, but they replied saying that the table has is already full. Looking for the next table, she noticed a nearly empty table with only a couple and some familiar Leos members. The couple was old, but they had a welcoming sort of appeal to me. The woman had blonde, almost white, hair while the man had plain white hair. Both spouses had …show more content…
His happy words uplifted my spirit, drawing a smile on my face! I realized how hard I worked to accomplish my job, and now I might even earn a prize! A joyful sigh slipped out of my mouth. I learned something that day. There is pride after hard work, and maybe even a prize! This lesson is added to my life in so many ways. It has encouraged me to provide dedication in everything I do. This lesson, especially applies to me in school, and it definitely helps. “I prefer to earn it. It makes me appreciate it

It is important to keep honoring our veterans because they have sacrificed so much for this country. Also we honor them because we need to tell them how appreciative we are of their dutiful service to our country. Even the president honors our veterans. Each year the president or one of his representatives lays a wreath on The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers in the Arlington Cemetery every Veterans Day to honor those veterans. Even though the first unknown soldier was laid to rest there on Armistice day on the year of 1921 this ceremony still continues. This is one way that shows just how important honoring our veterans…

President Woodrow Wilson announced Armistice Day in 1919. Congress in 1926 preserved this holiday to be celebrated on November 11th to celebrate the US flags. An act was approved in 1938 to celebrate world peace on November 11th every year. Then in 1953 a Kansas shoe store owner suggested to replace Armistice Day with All Veterans Day. Dwight Eisenhower made this bill into a law so that Armistice day would officially become Veterans Day. But then from 1971 to 1978 it was to be celebrated on every fourth Monday in October. What is the first thing that goes though your mind when you hear the words Memorial Day? What does it mean to you? What symbolization does it hold in you? Ladies and gentlemen, sadly enough, the true meaning of Memorial Day has been seemingly lost by the majority of Americans today. Many confuse this day for Veterans Day or even Armed Forces Day. Although it is highly appropriate to honor all our veterans, living and dead, and to recognize their immeasurable contributions to our country, this is not the true meaning of Memorial Day. When I asked you what the day means to you…what is symbolized to you, what went through you mind? Did you simply think of it as another federal holiday? A 3-day weekend? The beginning of the 100 days of Summer…a BBQ? Or did you think of a mother…

n for these veterans defending Americans of the United States in past wars, we may not be free right now. These men and women risk their lives to our freedom, and this took a great deal of bravery and sacrifice. Many veterans even died, and I have seen on the news where many more are still dying, and families are losing their loved ones. It is very sad that many people choose to risk their lives, but they knew the risks and felt it was their duty and honor to fight on our behalf. So what is a veteran to you? Is it a soldier, a person in the air force, someone fighting in the marines? That's not what they are to me. They are fighters, answering the call of duty, responding to our prayers, and most importantly that they help fight for our country, the United States of America.…

Courage can be defined as the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulties without fear. Few people understand courage until put into a situation requiring service above self. On the other hand, for veterans, courage plays an important role everyday while deployed. It takes a lot of a person to leave home and say goodbye to loved ones. Even more courage is required to defend and risk death or injury for a greater cause. Courage is the drive that thrusts veterans through their difficult journeys. Imagine sleeping in tents every night, but not being able to sleep thinking, “Will I survive tomorrow?” Furthermore, courage motivates veterans to keep trying, no matter what. Veterans share an assortment of fears, from getting shot to being disabled. Veterans have to use courage to mask that fear time after time, even when they thought they had none left. When looking in a dictionary, having courage seems pretty easy, however, when times require true sacrifice, one’s reaction displays the true character of an individual.
