Personal Narrative: Springboard Diver
As I stood on the board, I imagined myself soaring through the air, picturing every move I made until sliding into the water as perfectly as possible. I competed as a Springboard Diver for six years. Diving helped me discover and further explore the nature behind what motivates me and keeps me mental strong and capable, which is now an immense aspect of who I am. Although I am no longer a Springboard Diver, it still influences aspects of my everyday life. Diving is unique in how it is more mentally taxing than it is physically. Diving has a major mental aspect that many people do not realize at first. Standing backwards at the end of a springboard, ten feet into the air with the majority of your foot hanging off, trying not to think

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…

Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…

One of the professions I have a lot of interest in would be marine biology. I took the high school course on it last year and I had a lot of fun in the class. The critters were adorable and I was able to play with all of them, whenever I wanted. My favorite, honestly, would have to be the brittle sea star. It was so cool!…

I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…

Across from me was a handsome, dark haired man, broad-shouldered holding a Les Paul classic custom guitar playing melodious songs while I lay on a nice big red beach chair. In my hand was a big glass of iced tea shimmering in the bright sun as I took a sip it cooled the inside of my throat causing me to keep my cool temperature in the hot summer. It was the perfect day to be out, with the sun casting just the right amount of shine to give me that perfect sun-kissed tan. I was lying on a beautiful red chair with my legs sprung up in a gorgeous white cotton maxi dress. As, I got up and started to walk towards the ocean I could hear the waves up ahead. I took my shoes off and set foot on the hot, white sand. I could feel the sand going through in between my toes from every step I took. As I stroll along the edge of the beach I feel free of worries and stress, I am just enjoying the holidays, no school, or work just free time. In the middle of the ocean were many surfers in yellow shorts riding in the various color surfboards. They were going so fast doing so many tricks…

Mammals have shown to have a special reflex that allows them to dive to deep depths for long periods of time without coming up for air. This is known as mammalian dive reflex or MDR. This reflex has also been studied to see if it applies to humans. Professional breath-hold diving has been a common practice in several countries for many centuries, for harvesting sponges, pearls and seafood (Ferretti and Costa 2002). This practice is declining; however, in Japan and Korea there are still around 30,000 divers. Many studies have looked at the physiological aspects of these divers. Studies of diving operations and patterns, seasonal variations, diving equipment, gas compositions at the end of dives, and estimated gas exchange during diving have been done in order to better understand what the factors are effecting these dives (Ferretti and Costa 2002).…

The water was freezing cold at first but it gradually improved. When i reached the dock my friend instantly said, “Hey, want to go jello diving?” I must have looked at him with one of the funniest and dumbest faces he has ever seen because he instantly bursted out laughing. “What?” I asked. “Jello diving. The bottom of this lake has two to four feet in depth of thick, gooey muck that feels like jello.” “Sure,” I replied, “But I’m not the greatest at diving. I’m not even sure if I know how to dive.” After a brief demonstration on diving i tried it out myself. It looked so simple but didn’t turn out to be. As i dove in my legs and back curled and smacked against the water. My back tensed up and my legs seized into one position with no movement. This only lasted about five seconds though. I crawled my way back up onto the dock. When i got up there my friend asked me if I was ok while trying to hold back a laugh. I turned around to show him my bruised back. “Oh my gosh. Are you ok. That looks really painful.” “It is,” I replied with what little breath I had. I decided I would jump in instead of dive. My first attempt i completely failed because i was paranoid that I was going to go too deep and then I wouldn’t be…
