Personal Narrative: Professionalism In The Field Of Physical Therapy

My experiences from volunteering and shadowing health professionals has taught me a great deal about professionalism in the field of physical therapy. At the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children, I had the opportunity to learn from Kelly Meyer. For one, Mrs. Meyer was an excellent mentor, and a clear and patient communicator. She used appropriate vocabulary for patients and their families to explain medical terminology in a manner they could understand. She went into sessions with a positive attitude and encouraged patients to put in the utmost of effort, which improved their quality of care. She regularly catered to her patients by making sure they were satisfied with their sessions. Her performance in daily practice illustrates
Students of physical therapy must devote their time, reflecting their ability to be fully dedicated to their patients. It is important that students in the program are selfless individuals with a concern for the welfare of others. I have a deep interest for patients, and I enjoy devoting my time to them because I feel a personal obligation to cater to their needs. During peak hours at Kapi’olani, the waiting room would be filled with families awaiting their session. I made it my responsibility to help as many patients as I was permitted to assist. I often ended up staying longer than my required time, but for me it was not a taxing task to dedicate my time to those I could help. It is truly an honor to be able to have the opportunity to assist someone that is not fully capable of helping
As I strive toward my goal of being a physical therapist, these values will remain at the forefront of my mind. I am passionate about people and their well-being, which makes me a strong candidate for the program. I believe that I possess the necessary interpersonal skills, appreciation for people, experience in physical therapy, and passion for the job to become a successful member of the physical therapy profession. I would keep these skills with me after completion of the program and apply them to my own practice. If given the opportunity to showcase these skills, I will demonstrate that I define what it means to be professional in a doctor of physical therapist degree
