Personal Narrative-Pointe Shoes
The unpleasant smell of sweat, blood, and old shoes fills my nose as I open my dance bag that is filled to the brim with various shoes, leotards, and other miscellaneous items. Tonight is the night. Almost ritually, I pull the thread through the needle and begin to sew the ribbons onto the edge of the shoe. “Twenty one years.” I think to myself. The thought that I have been dancing for twenty one years whipped through my head and caught me off guard. I snap my head up and look around me at the empty dance studio. An empty room with three barres and a mirror lining the four walls. It looks so empty, yet has always seemed so inviting to me. This space has been my escape and passion for twenty one years now. Suddenly, a sharp pain races through my thumb. I carelessly poked myself with the needle. Something I have not done since my first few pairs pointe shoes. Surprised, I quickly …show more content…
I rush over to my bag, take out my iPod, and play the music that will be used in my performance tonight. The beats of the music flow through my veins and I again rise onto my toes. Flawlessly, I perform the the dance, completing moves that I never dreamed of doing when I was younger. The door opens and one of my instructors quietly walks into the room. Startled, I look over and stop dancing. “On in an hour. You need to pay more attention to the time.” She states. “Already?” I reply in disbelief, only to look at the time and realize that she is correct. “Yes. Your last performance of this dance will be tomorrow on October 27, 2025. Do not be late that day because we are doing extra rehearsals.”says my instructor. “I will not.” I reply. Rushing out the door as fast as I can, I am not able to help but look back into the room. I imagine the evolution of my dance career from age three to twenty five. I shut the door and never turned

Back in summer of 2014 all of our friends were so excited for the new year. We were going to be in 8th grade, at the top of the food chain at our Junior High. Not only were we excited about all the different things we were going to be able to do as 8th grader, like take chinese or year round spanish if you're into that. But what we were focusing on the eye of the prize, the 8th grade dance. The best part about this dance was that it wasn’t any ordinary dance, everyone had to be dressed up in nice clothes or otherwise they would be asked to leave. This…

I could hear the bustle of people out in the crowd as I was getting ready for the dance recital. As I started to get ready for the first dance, someone came in and told us we were going to be starting in a few minutes. When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

We sat on her large green couch, pushing away the bean bag chairs that were in the way. Autumn was very upbeat, which made me excited to start the interview. “To get started, how were you introduced to the subculture?” She put her back against the back of the couch and began to recount how her whole journey began with the rave community. “Well, I’ve always tried to be conscious of my body and wanted a new way to work out that was fun. A friend of mine was a hooper. She let me use her beginner hoop, a bright yellow hoop with red tape on it and took some time to teach me so tricks.” She continued her story explaining she practiced and practiced, toning her muscles, but also learning new moves and eventually was invited to perform with her friend. “The rest is history.
