It was Adrian’s 9th birthday and all our family, along with Adrian’s friends from school, came to celebrate. It's a tradition for everyone from our family to bring their own homemade food to gatherings. My Uncle Willie brought rice and beans, my Aunt Marce brought her potato salad, and my Grandma managed to make a whole bunch of tortillas. Rather quickly however, everyone noticed that my Aunt Mona wasn't here, as she would usually bring a variety of sweets everyone enjoyed. My Mother told us that, my Aunt won't be able to make it to the party because she came up with a case of shingles and felt it was best to try and avoid contact with others until it goes away. The party felt incomplete without her but we were able to still have fun and celebrate Adrian’s birthday. Thankfully my Aunt made the right call in staying home and everyone started wondering what…

When she took the bait she had gotten caught because a few days later they said that she was using counterfeit bills to buy her things. So the cops brought her to the station to question her. She said that she hadn’t known they were counterfeit and said she had gotten the money from me. That's when the plan backfired. The brought me in for questioning and I said that I hadn’t know they were counterfeits and that I just found them in the grass one day. The questioning had ended there but not for my parents. They ground into my sister for taking the money from me and then started grinding into me to figure out where I had gotten the money. I told them that I got it from a friend so I could use it as a way to get Meradith, my sister, to stop stealing money from me and from them. They said it was stupid of me to do that because she could have been arrested and kept in prison for a long time and they didn't want that to happen I told them I had done it for the greater good and they just scoffed and scowled at me. From that moment forward I haven't talked to my family or anybody since then because I didn't want to be punished for trying to do the right thing. I haven't spoken to anybody about it, not even Mr. Meany. I’m glad…

It was just a normal day. I woke up, bruhsed my teeth, and took a nice long shower. With the mirrors full of steam and the water dripping down the side. I dried off and put on some Nike sweats and headed upstairs while my sister (Audryanna) was sleeping. As I…

“When I was ten years old, my brother Miguel came back from the U.S. to visit us. When he was ready to leave, he told my mom, ‘Hey, are you going to let Kiko (which was my nickname) come to the U.S., so he can go to school and have an opportunity?’ and my mom turned to me and said, ‘Do you want to go with him?’ Then I looked at her and replied, ‘Do you want me to go?’ and she nodded in approval, so I went into the house, got a backpack, and put three pants, three shirts, and a few other things in there because I didn’t have many belongings. I then went back outside, jumped into the car, and left my mom. I didn’t see my mom again until I was a senior in high school, and a lot took place during those years” (Castellanos).…

I was listening to Party in the U.S.A by Miley Cyrus, a weird and strong effort to look at the bright side of this new life; it worked because the song always makes me want to dance and that day wasn’t an exception. I remember coming out of the plane and thinking “God, it smells so good. It smells like someone just cleaned everything.” Then I saw a cleaning lady and I knew I was right. When we walked out of the airport, I noticed it was a cloudy day but it was really hot, it’s one of those moments where you don’t know if you should take your jacket off or not. My cousin picked us up and her excitement was contagious, for the first time in that day, I smiled. She took us to Fuddruckers, we ate and talked a lot, it brought many memories from when my mom, my sister, and I used to come to Miami to visit and we would eat there sometimes. I liked it there because of all the photos of artist that I like, so that cheered me up too. That night, at my uncle’s house, before going to sleep my mom said “Thank you God, because we’re okay.” And I took her hand and said “Amen.” While she was sleeping, I prayed all night until I fell asleep. I prayed for my sister, I prayed for my mom, I prayed for my dad, I prayed for my friends, and I prayed that my life here was good. God only knows how much I prayed for my life to be good…

Fitriana’s head was covered in a hijab and she was dressed in oriental clothing in Brownsville, Texas where almost everyone is Hispanic, but I did not question why she would be in the city; my question was “What in the world is she be doing sitting in a Christian church?” Curiosity filled the air inside the temple as people stole glances at her every couple of minutes. As it turned out, she was a foreign exchange student housed by one of the families of church.…

When I got to the kitchen a strong scent of grits, eggs, and sausage filled the air with a wonderful and delightful smell. It took a while to enter since there was a line. I think it took about 20 minutes to actually be across the border. Once we crossed the border My grandma said, “ Sergio, puedes llevarme a una tienda a comprar tinte para que mi pelo cubra mis canas?” She was basically saying if my grandpa could take her to the store to buy hair dye to cover up her grey hairs. My grandpa drove to beauty store and waited for my grandma to come back. When she came back we drove to my Tia Quata’s house. We always go there to visit my cousin Michelle. Michelle is my cousin that is the same age as me. Michelle came up to me and gave me a hug and said “Hola Celeste”. “Hola Michelle como estas?” “ Good and you?” “Goods good.” I laughed at her accent when she was speaking to me in english. We played for about an hour while my grandparents and her grandparents spoke to each other. Michelle asked if I wanted to walk to the store with her. I told her that i had to ask first. New Year's eve was the first time meeting my Hispanic boyfriend's family, of course I had taken a few Spanish classes back in high school, but not even the most advanced class could have saved me here. As the night grew longer, the room began to flood with people. The live mariachi band was over the top and rambunctious;they were the life of the party, but I felt as if my ear drums were about to burst. Everyone was up and about dancing, chatting, eating and visiting with one another. It seemed like everywhere I looked I saw family and friends hugging and exchanging handshakes throughout the night! The room was filled with love and joy, everyone reminiscing over the years and catching up on lost times.…

. The day of my Quinceanera started early. I had just turned 15 and it was the birthday I had always dreamed of. I was always a dama in other Quinceanera’s, but now it was time for my own celebration. In Mexican culture, a dama is just like a bridesmaid. I had 14 of my closest friends as my dama’s to be a part of my “court of honor”. All 14 girls wore beautiful hot pink dresses and had polished hairstyles. The girls looked like beautiful dolls. When my mother was a little girl she had two Quinceanera’s. One celebration took place in Mexico and the other here in California. Looking back at my moms photo’s, I could see that both celebrations were huge and costly. I was the first of all my cousins to have a Quinceanera. My mother and other family members worked for over a year to plan the celebration that followed.…

What is a quinceanera? I wasn’t too sure what it was at first, so I decided to write a report on what exactly happens at this event. At first, I thought it was like an American girl's ‘sweet sixteen.’ I was way off, turns out that a quinceanera is a religious custom in the Hispanic Culture that celebrates a young Hispanic woman becoming of age, which is fifteen. It values the importance of youth to maturity, religious beliefs, family, and social responsibility.…

It was step-up day, and we were playing games on the field with the fourth/soon to be fifth graders. I saw my dad walking towards the field, and I knew it was time to get ready. I said goodbye to my friends and they wished me good luck. I was really excited to see my family coming in for the evening shabbat services. We headed up to the temple, and take some pictures with my grandparents and cousins. I greeted an endless amount of relatives, family friends, and people I have never met before. The service was beautiful, and the wine (grape juice for me) and challah were passed out. Dinner was served in an adjacent building where we visited with relatives from all over the country. First cousins, second cousins, third cousins twice removed, you name it. Uncles, aunts, great uncles and aunts and of course my grandparents all join us for a delicious dinner. We all talked and caught up, and it made me more comfortable to see that my family was there to support me, and I was excited for…

My younger sister Alba is in elementary school. Last year was the first year in which she had to actually study and take on more responsibilities in school. My parents didn’t speak English well, so I was the one to help her to study and do her homework. I like teaching; it’s something that I enjoy doing so I did not mind helping Alba with her schoolwork. Even if I had a test to study for, I still made room in my schedule to help her study for her tests. I felt that it was my duty as an older sister. However, when my older cousins would come over, Alba would ask them to help her with her schoolwork. I know my sister loves me, but I would still feel worthless and useless. By her going to other people for help, I would assume that my help was a thing of last resort. It is true that I cannot always be there for my sister. In a way it is wrong of me to have my sister accustomed to me helping her because next year I will be in college, miles and miles away. Then what? I cannot help her then. Sometimes, I cannot even help her now. There were days when I was overwhelmed with schoolwork that when Alba would ask me to help her study I would refuse to help. As I studied, I would hear my sister cry and I would feel terrible about myself. It made me feel unreliable. My role as a caretaker was not being fulfilled; the person I loved most was let down because I took her trust in me and abused it. Once more, I would put my own schoolwork down and help Alba with her schoolwork.…
