Personal Narrative: My Way To The Water
Swaying in the wind, was a yellow flag; letting me know that the water was moderate but safe to enter. Once I could see the sand I removed my shoes and socks and prepared to feel the warmth of the sand between my toes. Warm, grainy sand hid between my toes and cling to my feet as I made my way to the water. Using the sound of the waves as company, I meandered along the shore. I was thinking of a way to embrace my assignment; I had to spend time alone. It was time for me to appreciate doing nothing. Usually, I pride myself on self-discovery and spending time alone. Today, however, felt unordinary I was not accompanied by my iPhone. I never realized how much I depend on it. It is my clock, watch, timer, calendar, file organizer, and connection

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…

Nearing the end of the tube I can almost see the shore, It feels as if I've been riding this wave for days. This wave is my hurdle in the ocean that is life, choppy at the beginning but slowly passing by. The ocean has many waves, one for each surfer to ride, my specialty wave happened to be dyslexia. It was in the second grade that my teacher first realized I was different from the other students, because I had yet to read my first book. My parents had found this odd as well, and took me to see a neurologist, who diagnosed me as having dyslexia. I did not quite know what this meant at the time, I only knew that it was the reason I could not comprehend the topics as easily as my classmates.…

I was in at Save-A-Lot a couple of weeks ago and while I was in line to check out, I overheard a lady talk about a man that was following her on the walking path behind my house. She was talking about how this man would follow her for a couple hundred feet then stop, completely strip down, and would start performing sexual acts on himself. She said that she doesn’t feel comfortable walking on the walking path anymore. We need to take action to stop these things from happening and make the walking path safer.…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

Five years ago we were crazy about each other. Now I stand, I stand here and watch the silent tides pull her thick, red blood into the wide and black ocean under the bright moon. I can feel the wide gap mischievously release a dark red substance down my right arm. Drip, drip, drip. The sound of it drowned out the police sirens and cop screaming in my aching ear.…

When I first came into this class I was somewhat egocentric I thought that my broad views and beliefs on pop culture could have not been different than others, so I thought. However, as the class went on, and I read the articles which many of them I found very interesting. And the critical thinking pages of our hand book I clearly needed to learn more about pop culture in our society and what role it plays. The other thing I did not know was the more a person questions pop culture the more reason you can get out of it.…

It was a clear morning in the UP. The fresh air and the cool, slight breeze was blowing through the pine branches from Lake Superior. It was nearing the end of May and Larry was preparing to leave the deer camp for a few weeks. He was going back to his home “below the bridge” in Big Rapids, Michigan. He had to cross the Mackinac Bridge because he was called in for a business meeting. Larry is sole owner of a canoe rental business called “Down the River”. He went to his neighbor, Robert Jarvi, who lives a few miles east of his camp. “Hey, Robert, would you mind watching over my cabin for a few weeks?” asked Larry. He told his neighbor that he would have access to the cabin and to check on it two to four times a week. He gave Robert the key and went on his way. Unsure if Robert could check the camp that often, Larry also asked his other neighbor, Eric Salminen, to drive by it at least once a week. Larry also gave Eric a key to the cabin. Larry instructed Eric to always lock the door when leaving the camp.…

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”, a quote that Eleanor Roosevelt once chanted. This is something that I once never dreamed of accomplishing. As a child, I was described in three words which included quiet, shy, and a scaredy-cat. These words would slowly disappear after a visit to East Silent Lake Resort, in Dent, Minnesota. It’s a place in which me and my nine family members vacationed to three years ago, when I was thirteen years old. This visit to the resort was during a humid summer. During this visit, I learned a valuable lesson that helped me understand how this statement can help people grow, like it helped me. This adventurous day would involve a rusty pontoon, royal blue waters, and an enormous lifejacket. I’ll…

I've always dreamed about being on TV as a little kid, but who knew that I could actually do it on one of my favorite shows: Survivor. Survivor takes surviving in the wilderness to the max. You are stranded on an island with about 23 other people, living on rice and beans and in a shelter that you created from the environment (bamboo, leaves, etc.). The point of the game is to survive mentally, physically, emotionally and most of all, socially. You are put into teams in the beginning and you compete with each other in body and mind breaking challenges. If you lose the challenge, your team has to vote someone on your team home. This is where alliances and your social game come into play. To survive, you need to make allies, but also learn when…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

The most prominent time that I had to call upon my internal character is when I was asked to help with a group of kids from Mexico city that came up to Duluth for a month. During this time I was asked join the group on a weeklong trip to the boundary waters. The week before this trip I was at a camp called Positive Energy, it is a summer camp, during this week we went canoeing and rock climbing. The group from Mexico had never done anything like that so the camp leader asked me to help them learn the basic skills like paddle strokes and how to belay for climbing. After the week was up I was approached by the leader and asked if I would join them in the following week trip to the boundary waters as an assistant counselor, I couldn't say no. our first few night we spent camping and exploring the beautiful northern Minnesota. These kids had never even set up a tent before this, so me and the other American person I was with helped them learn how to set up a tent, start a fire and filter water.…
