Personal Narrative: My Urban Experience
Going into Sophomore year, starting my Urban class with Mr. Berkson, I was worried. Although I had heard he was a great teacher, something about being in a different class then I had planned worried me. Going into Sophomore year, I had planned to join Eastern Religions, but after going through some serious consideration, I decided to switch into Urban. To this day, my decision has not let me down. I enjoyed Mr. Berksons class all year, for many reasons. These reasons include his great humor, his passion of teaching, his endurance and dedication.

Not only did I enjoy Mr. Berksons class because of his way of teaching, I also enjoyed it because of what he taught. There were many things I enjoyed learning about, and then there were things I did not enjoy. In this course of a semester, we learned and read about many interesting topics including, the discovery of Chicago, Chicago becoming a “shock city”, and many other topics that led to the great city Chicago is today. Out of all the topics we have studied throughout this course, my favorite would have to be learning about the great migration and the black. I enjoyed learning about this because it shows how african americans came to chicago and how they brought their culture to the North. I also like seeing how the violence in the south side in the earlier 1900’s is still happening in the city today. This is my favorite topic because studying this made me realize how our city has changed/ evolved since this time. We still hear about racism, gangs, and that black lives matter, but we never really pay attention to how this conflict started, until I studied Urban studies.

I feel I have grown as a student in the context of this course because I have learned how to use a textbook to study. I also have learned so much about the city that I can use in my life to this

I enjoyed the conclusion of Jacques d'Amboise's essay. He presents a metaphor which explains how dedicated he his to teaching. He compares a person to a trunk in the attic. It is up to you what you put in that trunk. If you pollute it, you are polluting the future of children. If you fill it with art, literature, poetry, and love: that is what you will end up with-children who are loving, and filled with culture.…

It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

On the second day of school during my sophomore year, I realized how much Wahlert meant to me. It had become my home, the place where I felt like I belonged; school almost even seemed like a break from summer. Over the summer, I had become an empty shell and spent my time at the computer wasting the time away; the only interactions I had were with my family, and on rare occasion with my best friends, when we had sleepovers. To see the people I had missed over the summer was great. All of these things felt so true in that moment.…

As I was writing my personal narrative for my composition 1 class, it easily made my mind boggle. After I had got started on my personal narrative, it was easy for me to keep writing and keep following along the story line. The main strength of mine that the essay played to was my creativity and my flexibility for different writings, because I have never written an essay as serious and sad as this one, but I did have to add my happy ending when I finished the story. I wanted it to be very attention grabbing with a twist, but I also wanted it to be very emotional.…

“Graduation, the hush-hush magic time of frills and gifts and congratulations and diplomas.” You weren’t lying when you said that Maya Angelou. May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. After all, our class had the biggest percentage of graduates who were actually…

One more good point is how the class was taught, which made it a better class. Professor Belz made the class extremely emotional and humoristic especially when the readings where explained. Moreover, this made the readings easier to understand and more attractive for the students. Even though the class was early in the morning, professor Bellz kept the lecture alive at all times. In fact, I never lost interest or even stopped listening to the lecture because the way it was imparted. In addition, the class period was short and this made it better because I had the time to do…
