Personal Narrative: My Trip To Illinois River
The weekend trip to the Illinois River On the journey to the Illinois River I couldn’t help to be anything but excited, for it was my first float trip to the Illinois River. Upon arrival to the War Eagle Resort; i exited the vehicle to the refreshing country air and the sounds of children playing, the sound of different kinds of music, and the trickle of the Illinois River; however, I was also hit by the sweltering, hot July air. As my friends and I set camp up I had become excited for the nights festivities, for a big barbeque was planned, we had the beer on ice, the charcoal grill set up, potato chips with various dips, the steaks were seasoned, the chicken was marinated; it was a feast fit for a king. After a long night of drinking

“Click, click, click” I stand up after buckling my snowboard bindings and glance out across the horizon. I see the deep blue’s of Lake Winnipesaukee and the cool icy blues over the scattered coves. I look ahead and realize that I am the last one to start down the fresh packed powder trail. Quickly I hop along to gain speed to catch up to my family.…

What can happen in 30 seconds? A lot more than you would think. In DuQuoin IL, at Street Machine Nationals my family and friends decided to head to a dragstrip near the Holiday Inn we were staying at. My dad, mom, sister, and I rode in our 1993 Mustang, while my dad’s friends and my brother rode in their Tahoe. The night was going great, we could hear the crickets chirping and the frogs singing, it was peaceful.…

There I am sitting in my canoe, I close my eyes and just listen. I listen to the trees swaying in the breeze, the raindrops pitter-patting on my coat, the movement of the paddle as it dips into the water. I picture the beautiful autumn foliage that surrounds me as leaves gently fall from the tree onto the surface of the water and make a print on the water, even if it is only there for a second. As English writer William Hazlitt once said “We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts.” This is how I felt out on the river during our trip, I felt like I could really understand and appreciate the beauty and serene peace of being one with nature. I also felt like I could appreciate the care that it takes to keep…

For a few summers after my daddy went to heaven, I found myself taking long walks into the woods, a far piece behind the back of my house. When I was young I’d play there every day and over time the trails grew wide. I knew those chaotic mazes as well as my own reflection in the Miner’s River. Sometimes I’d count the steps it took to reach a fork on a specific trail, having already decided which trail to take till I arrived.…

Arriving at the river, I abandon discretion and resolve that this morning I’m going to wade wet. With my pulse quickening and clutching my rod and fly pack, I venture forth on a quest for one of my favorite and secluded fishing spots. Covertly slipping into the river before the break of day, I finally relax and in the dim predawn light experience a moment of intimacy with God’s…

Yesterday me and my Dad went on an 11ish mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. This hike was probably one of the coolest hikes I've been on. It went from one beautiful landscape to another. As I was laying in bed that night with my muscles aching from the extra 1.5 miles we didn't plan on, I realized I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my Dad. He introduced me to my love of the outdoors and my passion to hike the entire AT. I hope one day ,Dad, we can stand on Mount Katahdin together and look back at the 2190 miles behind…

Where you live defines who you are. This statement holds more truth than one may realize. Coming from a small, low income town, you see different aspects of life, and face many privations to reach your final destination. Often people who face struggles, tend to work harder to escape those struggles. However, they neglect to return to help others who face the very same struggles.…

I live in a small city called South Lake Tahoe in the state of California. The people in South Lake consider themselves locals as long as you have lived here for more than 10 years. However, locals consider our city a town. Our town is mainly a tourist town, skiers and snowboarders in the winter and campers in the summer. When somebody moves to South Lake Tahoe, it may only be for a few reasons; to be a ski bum, get out of the bay area, or family. The people that move here either make it or they do not because of financial reasons. It is very hard to make a decent living here. To say it short and simple, a person can move up here with money or they learn to live paycheck by paycheck.…

Everyone has their own community or organization for which they belong to. Within that community you tend to find who you are and what you are about. For me I found my identity in being an outdoors man. Being an outdoors man at my young age seems to be rare at this day, but that doesn’t prevent me from doing something I love and appreciate. Growing up with my family full of avid outdoors men helped influence me and only made my identity stronger.…

On Saturday April 13, 2013 I was walking through the parking garage on the USAA campus in San Antonio, TX to start my 4 hour work shift, I began to go through the turnstile and seemingly startled awake a bat. This bat began to fly and squeal in fear. It darted at my head getting caught in my hair a couple times. I started to scream and flail my arms about trying to fend off the nocturnal flying mammal in fear. During what seemed to be forever I was able to unlock the turnstile and exit the entry way but not before rupturing two discs in my neck. This incident caused quite the turn of events in my life. I had been working for USAA for 3 years and truly loved it there. I also lived in a beautiful apartment with my mother and two children and…
